Family member is in the process of trading 320d compact for 320d coupe, the replacement car only has one key, a plipper is not desperately needed but obviously it will make sense to have a spare coded key.

Whats the best way apart from the BM dealer to obtain a spare coded key for this motor, normal key or indeed plipper at reasonable cost.

Haven't enquired at BM yet, the shock may be too much for a Luddite..;)

Try someone who's a member of the Master Locksmiths Association. There're possibilities that will make you think. Try a search for the words "master locksmith car key".

Possibly, re the price for the "real thing". I had a chat to a chap in his shop last year, and I was quite shocked at what he could do. I suppose that one must say that if a "good guy" can copy certain things, then the bad 'uns aren't far behind.

Well handily the local BMW specialist can get a pukka plippa for £80 all in so order placed.

Interestingly a genuine key from BMW main dealer is £100.This will be cut and coded to the car and will work "out the packet".It will only need synchronising to the cd locking system.hth

This is the route the key will be coming from, the specialist can get a bit of discount presumably.

Interestingly our MB's second plipper was about £65 or £70 some 6 or 7 years ago from MB parts dept coded from the factory, yet we hear of other makes regarded as economical vehicles having key replacement costs of eye watering proportions....sometimes reputations don't pan out as expected under the magnifier, i fully expected £150 to be the starting figure for the BM.
