I've seen this done. You prise the rubber boot off the existing cap, but they're glued or something further down towards the cap so you spray WD40 in and let it soak while you try to prise the rest of the rubber boot off.

Slide the boot up the wire, prise open the crimped connector, remove the cap & boot. Fit to your freshly cut HT new lead wire.

I have no idea where you buy the wire but it comes on a medium sized NGK badged spool (i guess there will be other brands) and is a bit of a pain to cut cleanly.

given that the leads are breaking down, the caps boots and ends wont be far behind.

It would be false economy to bodge it.

Don scruffy clothes, head for nearest scrapyard with an Astra/Zafira/Vectra of suitable engine size, open bonnet of said Astra/Zafira/Vectra, remove all HT leads and dizzy cap in one go, offer nice man two quid for his trouble.

The leads may not be brand new, but they won't be in any worse nick than the ones you've already got.

I'm intrigued to know what Astra G engine has HT leads, I thought they all had coil frames like the Z18XE?

if i offered my nearest breaker £2 for some ht leads his dog would be chasing my bum down the car park
i think seeing as its a tough enviroment under the bonnet i would be buying new leads if i intended keeping the car
the day of lengths of coil cable screwed onto the ends went out a long long time ago and was hit and miss back even then

I agree with bb about getting new ones, I did try and find the stuff on a roll about 5 years ago and couldn't get any easily.

Autovaux will probably do you a set much cheaper than Vx, maybe give them a ring/email:-

I had 4 engine mounting studs and a particular 2 foot of wiring loom for the Escort from two different scrappys, both times the answer to the question of what I owed them was "just give us a couple of quid mate". One scrappy had a clean concrete yard and a reception counter, the other was a proper 3 cars high / mud / bonfire / Alsatian job. I'd have happily paid ten quid for either of the parts at the time.

Saying that, there's plenty of HT lead sets on the bay for 14 quid:
