Volkswagen Polo IV - 1.2 cylinder head - Auristocrat

My next door neighbour bought a new VW Polo 1.2 IV (three cylinder) back in September 2009. Talking to him today, he said that he had had the engine management light come on, so he took it into the dealer as instructed to do in his manual. Dealer diagnosed that he needed a new cylinder head. Car has done 15,000 miles. Dealer indicated that it is a common fault.
Luckily the car still has 5 months of the warranty left, otherwise the dealer reckoned the repair would have cost him £1200.
