Some advertising by car manufacturers can be entertaining, some so daft. Currently Peugeot are running full page ads in some national newspapers trying to extol the virtues of the new 208 model. The headline message: "Let Your Body Drive." Eh? I could never see myself owning any French-made car, but this really caps it. Wonder if they paid a UK or Continental agency to come up with such mind boggling jibberish. Anyone recall a car ad that did work?

I suspect a good proportion of them. Advertising really does affect us despite what we like to think. Companies wouldn't pay millions for it if didn't.

A Hillman Imp advert showed an Imp going round a bend in the road and the caption read "Tear around the dotted line".

I like that. The old Landrover ads used to say "Streets ahead in every field", which I also liked.

Also liked their 'Best 4x4 x far' slogan in the 80's.

I loved that 'Everything we do is driven by you' Ford ad in the early 90's with the Brian May soundtrack. Not only was it an entertaining ad, and a clever slogan, but the ad itself was an object lesson in how to make a (then) dreary, depressingly average range of cars look actually quite appealing.

Which part of your body? Could lead to some interesting journeys...

Only half of my advertising works, the problem is that I don’t know which half.

The same advert (in French) with the same slogan (in English) is airing on French TV, although with some scenes mirrored to put the 'body' in the left seat. No, it didn't make me want to buy one either, especially since the car is as pretty as any new Peugeot - ie not at all.

The 405 ad in the burning sugar cane fields was memorable, but it didn't make me buy one. Nor did Papa and Nicole (or indeed Thierry Henry and Animal) sell me a Clio, but I enjoyed them trying.

Papa and Nicole was measured ( in car sales) as the most successful TV car add ever.

In 1988 just before they nearly went bust, Porsche launched the 964 and notoriously advertised it in Germany with the following slogan, without the even vaguest hint of irony (this was the late 80s):

Translated, the tagline reads:

"You can stay longer for breakfast and get home earlier for dinner. Is there a better family car?"

Ford ad' from the 1970's(?) when lots of other makers were trying to get a slice of the family saloon market,
"They can all make comparisons, but they can't make Cortinas"

Every boy, no matter the nationality, wants to be a train driver.

Alas Train drivers don't get the girls and the uniforms are cack. So every italian boy wants to be a carabinieri, with red, black and gold braid uniform and an Alfa with go faster stripes.

so what did you want to be?
Peugeot - body blow - Alastairw
Well I DID want to be a train driver - even went for the aptitude test at Crewe.

I pased on the theoretical parts, but failed miserably on hand/eye coordination, so I continue to work as an accountant.

train driving... must be a peice of cake , it steeres itself and all the engine driver has to know is throttle and brake, a moped licence should qualify anyone surely?

Let's hope BBD never gets his hands (or anything else) on a 208.
