Seen your first 62-plate? - Boxsterboy
I've seen a couple - a C-class coupe and a Vauxhall Agila. But I seriously wonder what will happen in 6 months time when 13-plate cars appear. How many buyers will advance or delay their purchases in the six months from March 2013 to avoid 'bad luck'?

I'll have a green one, please - with a ladder on the roof and a black cat on the bonnet.

I thought I'd read in one of the papers that the DVLA were allowing people to have a '62 plate between March and September 2013 if they didn't want a '13' registration. Not sure if its actually happening though.

We picked up a new car on Saturday (a VW Up!), and the dealer was only handing over 8 cars that day, which didn't seem like very many to me...

Some friends of mine have just advanced their purchase six months to avoid having a 13 on the number plate. The daft thing is that at the last minute they were told by the dealer that they couldn't collect the new car on 1st September this year because it needed some rectification work doing to it. That's what good luck a 62 plate brings! Since then they've been moaning like mad that the dealer had had the car a fortnight and had therefore had plenty of time to sort it. They didn't seem to realise that loads of people want their car on the first day of the new number so the dealer would have been inundated with pre-delivery checks. I would never ask to collect a new car on the first day of the new number. (And it wouldn't bother me one iota if it had a 13 plate!)

Agreed, l'Es. I picked up a new Saab on the last 1 August change in 1998. Great car with which we had four good years, but the pre-delivery check had clearly been rushed: crooked number plates should not be part of the package at any price.

They started out on the day by offering me the wrong car too!

And me, My car was delivered three weeks into the 10 registration. An unrushed and relaxed handover with a coffee during the paperwork. Another salesman was doing an equally relaxed handover at the same time.

A neighbour has a 62 plate. I saw my first two cars on 62 plates about two weeks ago. They also had trade plates. The 62 plates obviously not actually registered on the vehicles at the time.

This year for my local VW dealer sales are down a lot compared to last year. Last year was particularly good but it's quieter than it's been for a while for them.

I'm thinking '13' plates could be a bargain buy in the future.

Especially for green cars.

One of the benefits of paying £250 for a "personalised " registration plate. !!
Don't give two hoots about the neighbours knowing whether I have the latest car or not!

Why not save your £250 and get BO13 BYG ? ;-)

Followed an Evoke on Sunday (MC62 MAC - must be a personalised plate?), and saw a brand new tarmac lorry at work in East Kilbride.

I suspect there will be as many people opting for a 13 as avoiding them - my parents have ordered a new motorhome for delivery on 1st March next year, and the maker reports all manufacturing slots in Feb (it's a small outfit) now booked up, as they are not the first to request a '13' delivery!

I'd not be terribly bothered by a 13 plate but if it was my own money I'd not buy one. Might affect it's resale value. Might not of course but why take the chance...
Seen your first 62-plate? - PeterS
In fact, yes, there you go: tinyurl.com/bs29f5j

No need to have a '13 plate if you don't want to; you can still buy a car between March and September next year and have a '62 plate on it!

I suspect that one might go for more than £250 !!
And I hate, detest, numbers and letters being made to look like something else!!

When trading in for a new car could I have the new car registered with the number of my old car? It's not personalised but I've sort of got used to it. Would the dealer be able to sort it all out?

Yes you can. I did it when I got my last car, it was registered from new with my personal plate. All I had to do was fill in a form from the DVLA and gave it to the dealer. You could try to include this as part of the deal.

Thanks andyfr. I've looked on the DVLA website but I couldn't find the form. Could you point me in the right direction?

Even if they don't, those that do buy a 13 reg will inevitably suffer "bad luck" when it comes time to sell it on. For every level headed second hand buyer, there's surely plenty of others that will be superstitious. So used values will end up being lower than they should be, IMHO...

How much lower, who knows?

edit: snap - Humph beat me to it! :)

Having said that, the clever thing to do maybe would be to do a deal on a 13 plate pre-reg car about a month before it changes to 63. Bet there'll be rucks of unsold cars with 13s on them...

If I were a rich man....dubba dubba dubba dub...

Seen your first 62-plate? - oilburner
Actually, thinking about it, isn't it possible that 13 regs could be so rare, that they actually could command a price premium in the future?

Humph, you could be onto a winner there!

Is there any other country that identifies the year with the construction of the licence plate number?

And if there is, do the poeple in that country care as much as people in the UK?

Anybody know?

I love a new car, whether or not its financially wise. I mean, really love it and really show off about it.

But I can't say I care about the number plate.
Seen your first 62-plate? - PeterS
The Irish and the Germans have a year identifier on their plate, but the French don't. Not sure about the Dutch, but in Belgium the plate goes with the driver not the car AFAIK
Seen your first 62-plate? - WillDeBeest
Ireland, to my knowledge. And remember that Roman Catholics consider superstition a sin (yes, I know!) so I doubt there'll be any such concessions there.

There are certain combinations of letters I'd be unhappy to ride behind. KKK springs to mind, as does BNP. The numbers on the old plates were fun - I liked 727 and 255 on my first two cars - but the new ones are too dull to care about.

If they are unsold then they won't have a plate on them because they are unregistered. Unless a garage pre-registers loads.

That'll be why I qualified the comment with the words "pre-reg" then won't it?

Neighbour has a new 62 Reg............VW Jetta his 4/5th (Jetta/Bora) and he must have got further in his research into a new car - near to the back as it's Blue.............the previous 3/4 have all been Grey.

So far I've delivered three 62-platers: Audi A4 petrol auto, Mini Cooper D cabrio and a Passat Bluemotion. The Audi went out first thing on Saturday 1st Sept but it bore an N-reg prat plate instead of its 62 registration - which kind of defeats the object!

My first genuine spot was on Saturday afternoon, a nice one too - a gleaming blue Jag XKR with the roof down and a blonde in the passenger seat. Seen a few more 62s since then, including a new shape Mercedes Actros and an Audi TT RS.
Seen your first 62-plate? - BobbyG
Did you get a good view of the blonde in the passenger seat from your high up position? Especially if it had its roof down?

Another bik for Humph to consider ????
Seen your first 62-plate? - Ted

Was seriously tailgated by a blonde in a white Mini with the top down today. 30 mph limit, which I was doing. Traffic in front also happy at 30 too....... but she wasn't.

Obviously wanting to do a right at the lights much further down, she made her move and tried to get past me, driving on the hatched area in the middle of the road. Didn't see the pedestrian refuge 50 yds down and nearly ploughed into the bollards !

That was a 62 plater..........all took place outside the crematorium as well. An omen ?

I larfed

The object of having a new car on the first day the registrations are issued is, well, to show it off a bit I suppose. If you're not fussed about doing that, why request it for the busy period when you know the PDI will be a bit slapdash?

Obviously the dent business is doing very well these days!

Seen my first this morning.

A motorbike. Not sure what make or model. All I know was that it had a horrible tail light. Two vertical LED or bulb strips.

Seen my first this afternoon a boring Toyota on the M3.
I am really surprised to have waited this long as there are so many folks with lots of funds in my area and so many nearly new vehicles around.

I hadn't seen - or at least noticed - any until last Saturday, when we did a long motorway trip and suddenly they were everywhere, but mainly on Audis.

Fifteen or so 62 registered LGV tractor units outside the newly established Renault Trucks Northampton site. Assume they're for a bulk purchaser, possibly the nearby Norbert depot.

The previous occupants, Gerald White, were driven out of business by their association with LDV. Pity 'cos they ran a sideline as a Citroen repair agency. Useful to have a third string as well as the French car specialist Tony Brooks and the franchise sales/service outfit.

Good to see someone else can put the premises to work. Our local Iveco dealer is shutting up shop in a couple of weeks, with no prospect of anyone else taking on the large, well set-up workshops and yard.

So far I've only seen two. I'm not surprised because I'm not an inveterate number plate scanner.
