Off to take the car on a camping trip - RattleandSmoke
First time ever, I enjoy camping but lately I got bored of catching trains and carrying my stuff around. I am found a place in Derbyshire which is only an hours drive away and I thought it would be a good chance to test my new sat nav and also get to use my new 45-200mm lens for my G2.

Just thing that is bothering me, I might not sleep because I know I have to drive back the next day has anybody got any tips for this? I also like a few drinks to help me sleep and unwind when camping but I will limit this to 3 or 4 and I won't set off the next day to mid to late afternoon (early enough to avoid the rush hour around Stockport).

You'll enjoy camping with the motor, Ian. You can take a lot more kit to make yourself comfy.

I recommend a decent blow up bed, not a Lilo type. Get one at GoOutdoors in Cheadle on the way. A high capacity pump run off the car will blow it up in a few minutes. Then you won't worry about not sleeping.

Get a double if you're feeling lucky !

Have a good trip.

Ted

There's only one mattress you should consider - Thermorest. Brilliant concept - rolls up into nothing when not in use and as comfortable as you'll ever get in a tent. Expensive but very good - got mine half price in a Sale in Betws y Coed branch of Cotswold.

A herbal sleep remedy or something like Nytol?. Sleep Aid (doxylamine succinate) available through Amazon are even better.

I will just get a very cheap blow up bed for now, throw away kind to just to see how I get on. I can then always get a decent one for next year. And yep that is the main problem with camping on the train I can't take enough stuff and last time I think I got two hours sleep because the self inflating bed was useless. I will take a full size one with me this time.

And yep I was planning to go to Go Outdoors, possibly on the way to Derbyshire but that is probably not wise, but then there is one in Ancoats which is near my office so I might go to that one.

Also need to shell out on a new sleeping bag as I can't find my decent one, last time I ended up taking a cheap Argos one which was as much use as a cheese fire-guard.

Also I will be able to take a camping chair which will be a nice luxury.

Don't mess with Nytol. The only drug I partook in three years ago - gives you bad dreams and a bad head the next day. If you do go down the beer route - make sure you "manage" your peeing - I did this last weekend which meant not having to get up to pee in the night. I hate that when camping.
Off to take the car on a camping trip - RattleandSmoke
I am used to it, last beer at say 10pm so hopefully after 1pm I will be fine, 2pm fall asleep, 8:00am wake up then just spend the rest of the day lazing round until I slowly drive back.

Hoping to gain enough confidence for some Wales trips next year, decided Anglesey is too much of a faff by train and that £40 train bus £6.50 a day bus travel is too much when petrol wise it will only be 250-300 miles.

The really good thing about taking the car is that if the weather turned very bad you can always sleep in the car. Or indeed go home. Alcohol isn't the answer to sleep. Quite the opposite in fact. Peppermint tea. Disgusting but effective and no more disgusting than lager which hasn't been in a fridge.

:-)

>Disgusting but effective and no more disgusting than lager which hasn't been in a fridge.

Only a deeply desperate drinker would consume warm lager Humph.

What made you do it? Half an hour in the freezer is usually enough.

;-)

They do say you should try everything once just to decide whether you like it or not. Semolina might be one of the exceptions of course along with butterscotch Angel Delight. No one should eat those.

Lovely with vanilla ice cream.

>Disgusting but effective and no more disgusting than lager which hasn't been in a fridge.

Reminds me of an ex workmate in Namibia.

He was a heavy drinker with a stomach ulcer and had been told by the quack to pack it in. If he really, really, really needed a drink he should have a whisky and milk. Of course he took that as an excuse to drink it from half pint glasses.

We were discussing his "problem" one day when he told me about his vodka cocktail.

He'd had a braai at his place and ended up in the early hours putting the world to rights with a couple of other guys. They ran out of booze and were about to call it a day when Derek remembered a bottle of vodka he had in his airing cupboard.

He was in his early thirties and very conscious that he was going bald. Someone had told him that raw onions marinated in vodka for a few weeks and then rubbed into his scalp would reverse the process.

They ended up drinking his homemade hair tonic.

Yuck!

Mark may be able to shed light on another of his tales.

He was married but separated from a Chilean girl called Esmerelda. A right of passage he had to endure was eating a boiled egg with a half-formed chick inside.

Enjoy your trip Rattle and don't worry, famous last words.Remember the Sat Nav is only a guidance don't drive in somewhere where you can't get out.>:)
Off to take the car on a camping trip - RattleandSmoke
Don't worry I will be double checking the sat nav route with Google maps and an audience survey before I set off! In fact I will have two maps and a sat nav with me. Sat nav is really only a panic saving device so I don't need to worry about missing the turn off etc.

You need a radar on top of your car.>:) (only kidding) I like a few cups of herbal tea on a night time makes me sleep ok.

They're both anti histamines with a muscle relaxant sleepines effect. Doxylamine Succinate is the 'magic' ingredient in tension relief headache products such as Syndol, Propain Plus etc.

Mrs B and I have both found DS effective. The product sold through Amazon appears to be a grey import from the US; not sure it's available OTC in pharmacies.

I never bothered with all that mattress stuff when I was your age Ratto.

The ground was fine.

Never, ever consider spending the night in your car, that's something you'll regret forever.

It depends on the car. A blow-up mattress in the back of a Volvo estate is not the same as 4 people trying to sleep sitting in a mini.

>>>> Never, ever consider spending the night in your car, that's something you'll regret forever.

I can, off hand, think of three quotable types of examples that have happened to me;

1) Tent uninhabitable
2) Too tired to drive further
3) Drunk

In all three types I have slept comfortably in my car. Although to be fair in 3) I could have slept on a bicycle.

Its not the greatest, but there's a lot worse.

WTF!

What rubbish, some of my most memorable days or evening have only been possible because the car was available to sleep in.

If you are "drunk over the limit", then be mindful of being classed as "drunk in charge of a vehicle".

I had my fair share of run-ins with the law when I was younger, including sleeping in my car when I was drunk.

I can't say I have ever come across a situation where even a beligerent copper would do me for drunk in charge when he truly didn't think I was going to drive, and where I wasn't parked somewhere daft.

Worst I've ever had was when I had stopped and was sleeping once when over-tired and got heavily told off for parking in such a dumb place and escorted to the nearest safe layby to complete my sleep.

I don't know if I've been lucky or if most of the evil copper tales told are urban legend. I believe it to be the second.

I've done it a few times. Last one was with Mrs B - we went camping with a borrowed tent. The pole snapped in a strong gust of wind while trying o put it up in the dark.

Went to the pub, got drunk and slept in her Rover 114 - a GSi model though :-)

At 6' 2" I don't really remember it being a good nights sleep

I slpet in my Moggie 1000 in Knebwoth in 1978 (Led Zep gig) happy days !
Off to take the car on a camping trip - Alanovich
Memories. I slept in my Alfa 33 after an Oasis gig at Knebworth in the 90s. I had parked it at the top of a hill, knowing that it wouldn't start in the morning if there was any rain. There was rain, and I duly rolled it down the hill to bump start it in the morning, much to the alarm of my still snoozing passenger as the car set off in silence.

Also slept several times in a FIAT Regata, on a couple of long drives from the UK to Gibraltar around the late 80s/early 90s.

Oh yeah, and I used to sleep in my Renault 9 at Holyhead docks after nights out in Dublin a few years ago! Cheaper than buying a ticket on the ferry for the car and then having to sleep it off in a hotel. Get foot passage and come back on the late night crossing.

Ee, just remembered one from dim and distant childhood. We were on a touring holiday of Suffolk and Norfolk in Dad's Ford Zodiac Executive (MkIV - DUV 770J). We arrived late in Saxmundham to find that all the B&Bs in town were full. We had nothing pre-booked, so parked up in a public car park and camped in car. The car was big enough for my parents to wind back the front seats, leaving enough room on the back seat for my (older, larger) sister. The rear parcel shelf proved capacious enough for me, I think I must have been about 9 years old, and small for my age. But still, shows how big that parcel shelf was!

We recently returned from 5 nights camping at Searles in Hunstanton. Very pleasant it was too.
With a 6 man tent, clothing for all weathers plus cooking gear we filled the estate to the roof. So much so that we bought a dog guard so that we could ensure nothing came forward to squash the children in the event of sudden braking.
It saved having to buy a roof box.

We have dog guards in both cars for exactly that reason. Still need a roofbox though.

Several passengers have asked me what sort of dog we have.

Set off at 12:06 and arrived just before 1:00 which was quite impressive considering minor road works on the way. I ignored the sat nav all the way to Stockport (I know my own way better) from Hazel Grove onwards it was a very nice backup . The drive was fairly easy and the 54bhp Panda coped very well in some steep inclines.

Bought my heavier Vango rather than the lighter I got from Millets. Just having a light beer now before going to get some food from a local pub.

I really wish I was in Anglesey where my heart lies as I miss the sea so much but I really don't miss the faffing with trains and trams. I have a lot more stuff including this chair because I was driving.

£14 a night is steep though, I pay half that in Anglsey and get stunning views into the bargain, but hopefully I won't also get roudy scousers into the bargain!.

I am hoping a few more of these trips I will have the confidence next year to go camping properly in Wales with even more equipment, but I think I will stop short of buying a touring!. My vango is a nice double skinned three man tent and takes 15 minutes to put up, what more could I need? I might change my mind when it gets to 9c tonight though, but hopefully my three season sleeping bag will see to that. Also bought a blanket too.

I don't know why it is has taken me so long (four years) to finally get the confidence to drive outside of Manchester though! Perhaps because my new office I am generally doing 130-150 miles a week anyway.

Off to take the car on a camping trip - RattleandSmoke
It usually took us about 2 and a half hours to get there, and it is 117 miles :). Is just straight down the A55, that bit doesn't bother, it is the getting the A55 bit that does.

Rats - can get from here to the airport in less than 2 hours. Not speeding. Managed to get to central Manchester on the bike in quite a bit less than that. BTW paid 3 Euros to camp in Yepre the other night, top site as well.
Off to take the car on a camping trip - RattleandSmoke
Yeah I have to it, £14 is a bit steep for Derbyshire where I am now. I usually camp in Benllech for the stunning views towards the Great Ormne, it is a cheap site but was dead when I last went. This place is packed but it does feel very carravan clubby (which is what this place is)

Well I am in derbyshire now so not going any where, but maybe if we get another night couple of days I do do a practice run in the M56 before getting there. Does that round about near Chester still exist? I was told you can now get to the A55 from the M56 avoiding that big round about (a member on this side had a nasty crash on it, and I feared it before I knew that!).
Off to take the car on a camping trip - Alastairw
Its dead easy now. Just stay on the M56 and it sort of turns into the A55. I managed to miss the M53 turnoff once, its that easy.

And if I can get to the Wirral in 40 mins (late at night, mind you!) Anglesey is definitely two hours, even at Panda speeds.

Rats, this is meself setting off home after 5 day trip to Yorkshire last week. Bike is 70 years old and I'm not that much younger.

Came through your stamping ground on me way home as I was accompanying my mate Terry (2 years older than his Harley, which is same vintage as mine) back to Macclesfield; he has not been well lately and needs a minder in case the bike packs up as his right leg is still a bit weak after a stroke.

My point is if you can drive round Stockport, Bredbury and the rest of the lunatic asylum that is the Greater Manchester road system, you can go anywhere in this country. So quit fretting and faffing, and get yerself out there! ;-)
Off to take the car on a camping trip - rtj70
Rattle if you (filter) off the M56 at junction 15 onto the M53 it then becomes the A55. Don't go to the end of the M56 but the roundabout there has light I think. Easy enough but go via the M53.

Enjoy the current camping trip and do try out the M56.
Off to take the car on a camping trip - Ted

The roundabout by the Little Chef has been by-passed now, Rats. It's just one long road from Sowf Manchester to the Britannia Bridge over the Menai. Stick on the inside lane at 55 and you'll be there in a couple of hours.

Bit of lane changing west of Chester so you don't end up in Chester or up the Wirral...but it's an easy run.

Coffee stop just past the marble church at Bodelwydden.

In some ways is probably easier than Derbyshire, but then I am very used to city roads and city hell and I am not used to motorways, so although the M56 is probably far easier I am more used to the hell that is Stockport to Hazel Grove on the A6.

I doubt I will be going to Anglesey this year now unless we get a late heat wave, its flipping cold here now.

I when I go away I like to be near the sea I don't know why but it just feels like I am properly away. It feels like I am in a manc suburb here, which in many ways I am. All the people in the local pub sounded like they were from Stockport.

I am even on the flipping flight path to Manchester airport, close enough for the noise but not close enough to get pictures of them.
