Should they be reported ? - wotspur
I hate hypocrisy more than almost anything else.
This morning on the M3 , I looked in my van mirrors, prior to pulling out in to lane 3 to overtake a lorry or two, overtaking 3 other lorries, the next time I looked in the mirror there were 5 police bikes, thinking Wtf did they come from, anyway I proceeded past the lorries at70 before moving back in, whereby these bikes zoomed past like I was stationary, they must have been doing well over 90., probably over the ton
Surely unless on emergency,, in which case surely they'd be on blues and twos, they are restricted to the same limits

I always thought they were not allowed to exceed limits unlss on a call with the blue lights going

Could have been riders under advanced training......usually out in groups with an instructor.

But if they'd had a bit bit of light and noise you'd probably had noticed them earlier?

Their problem, not yours!
Should they be reported ? - Pat
>>Their problem, not yours<,

But is it?

Shouldn't the OP have been paying more attention to his rear view mirror while in lane 3?

It could well have been an emergency vehicle on a mission and seeing their approach helps plan a way to ensure they have unimpeded progress.

We had a 'Wotspur should pay more attention' thread after his accident the other week, so let's not turn this into another one.

While it's incumbent on all of us to keep up to date with what's behind us, big differences in speed do change the rules a bit because they increase the chance that a driver in front hasn't registered the arrival of the much faster vehicle. I think that transfers some of the responsibility on to the driver of the faster vehicle, to be super-aware of the actions and observations of slower drivers who may not have seen him. I'm sure this is part of police training, but it's something that may not occur to the average Gary in his M3.

If it was the M3, they were racing to Krispy Kreme in Basingstoke, the lipstick blush Donuts run out after about 10:30.

I Went to overtake on a straight bit of road, after we'd come off a major bend, I'm more interested of what is in front ofme when doing the speed limit and over taking two sets of lorries , than what Might come up behind me.... I drive a van,so I check my wing mirrors regularly so don't be high and mighty with your comments.
How frequently do u check your wing mirrors, if it had been an emergency, they'd have had blues and twos on, which I'd have heard, but Still wouldn't have increased my speed to enable them swift progress.... I found the link very usefull, I hope you did too

No you wouldn't. Anything over 50 mph or so and the vehicle in front can't really hear them.

Nice. So someone really needing help has a delay in receiving it, because of ***** like you.

Yep, his previous threads I have listed seem to indicate an attitude problem wrt Police and other road users.

Also take a look at this www.bluelightaware.org.uk/ which is a link off the PH posting.

Note..... that in the video, you are clearly told to;

1/ not jump red traffic lights - unless directed to do so by a Police officer
2/ not to cross double white lines
3/ not to enter a bus lane.
3/ do not exceed the speed limit.

ie, blue lights do not authorise other road users to break the law....

A while back I was on a long straight bit of the A68 with no traffic (or cameras:-) ) and was rapidly being caught up by a Volvo. I slowed a bit, (just in case it was an unmarked plod) and as it went past at near 100mph I saw the "Police driver training" plate on the back. That would have surprised the inattentive mimser. :-) Ihave also seen two BMW 5 series Police training cars full of trainees having their lunch sandwiches in Fife, well away from their Durham base, you can cover a lot of ground at high speed.

I recall eating sarnies and drinking our flask tea at 2 in the morning by the sea at Caernarfon on one of our courses. Hillman Hunter GT if I recall.

No North Wales expressway in them there days !

High speed training in an urban environment is also done. I recall lounging about on our garage forecourt, (waiting for punters) set in a 30mph limit, being surprised by a convoy of police cars going along the road at a VERY high rate of knots.

Glad to see that the BiB are getting training in the skills that they'll need to catch the bad guys.

+1.

At some point they'll have to thread through traffic at twice the speed of everyone else. I'd like them to be good at it.

Yup. It was always a pleasure to squeeze out of their way with an illegal creep through a red light and receive a courteous wave as they blasted screaming and flashing down the space between the lanes in Marylebone Road.

When I was a Clapham minicab driver we had a friendly racing relationship with the local plod who used the same kebab joint as us over in Peckham. We thought they took unfair advantage of their lights and sirens in the wriggle-and-blast through busy Brixton at 3 am...

The other really elite squad of mobile fuzz are the Queen's biker outriders who have cut me up several times. But as well as being authoritative they are impeccably courteous, and the rolling operation makes hardly a ripple even in busy traffic. Real class.

Not cheap of course.

Unlikely to be training. Normal training has all speed limits adhered to unless nationals.

Blue light runs, under training, are done in urban environments...but...you can usually spot them, as they are well slow. if you've spotted a very high rate of knots blue light run, it won't be training.

Today I saw 4 police motorbikes in convoy on M25, so I latched onto the back and pretended I had a police escort. Does that make me weird..?

Admirable.

I assume therefore, that you report yourself to the local constabulary every time you exceed a speed limit or broach any of the traffic laws?

I mean, you wouldn't want to be hypocritical or anything, would you.
