Engine sounds on a sunny autumn day.... - R.P.
Got overtaken by a roof down BMW Z4 - a newish one (think a 59 reg) it flew passed giving the full benefit of its straight six through a cheeky exhaust mod. Overtook him by outflanking him on an approach to a roundabout - hope he appreciated my six as I changed down. Sad to think that these sounds will be history soon as the only petrol engine of any worth will be asthmatic ultra efficient 3 or 4 cylinders, ubiquitous diesels and silent electrics....will miss them when they've gone....

I had the loan of a little 3 cylinder Colt back in the Spring when I had my Lancer serviced by the pain dealer.

Manual gearbox of course, and I really enjoyed driving it from Foulmouth to the moor and back.

It's obviously designed to be economical but, I gave it stick all the way and the exhaust/engine note was music to my ears.

These old duffers that drive automatics don't know what they're missing!

A Norton Commando with the throttle nailed to the stop is a sound made in Heaven.

850 Interstate preferably RR. Last time I rode one solo was at Blackbushe circa 1974. Ruddy free for all up the strip. Almost collided with (another clown) coming tuther way!! Nice machine though and reasonably well sorted for a British machine.

MD.

P.S. I was Sixteen.

And a well-thrashed Trident (of the Meriden ilk) even better still. But nothing, for me, beats the sound of half a dozen Foden 2-strokes loaded with gravel pulling out of Hoveringham quarry, a sound long associated with my childhood. Both the fleet and the quarry are long gone (though one 8-wheeler survives in preservation) but I can still pick that sound out miles away.

Never ridden a pre-historic British bike ! The best engine sound on a bike I ever owned was the VFR800 (VTEC) - dank - that thing could yowl when the VTEC came on song !

You could do worse that get yourself down to Mallory Park in July for the VMCC's Festival of 1,000 Bikes. Plenty of music for the ears, British, Oriental and European. Might even be the odd Harley or two. ;-)

Reminded me of trips to Donnington in the late 80s - Witnessed that JPS Wankel roaring around the place - now that was special...!

Whatever the merits or otherwise of Milwaukee's Iron Horse, the sound ain't one of them. It's the jazz music of the automotive world, a discordant clattering of pops, bangs and whistles, out of tune and with all the notes in the wrong order.

Fair comment. :-)

And a good analogy too; like jazz they're very much a Marmite sort of thing, you either love 'em or hate 'em. And agaiin like jazz, it's the ensemble that makes the solos bearable. True enthusiasts for the breed enjoy the subtle variations which the uneducated ear misses.

Never really taken to Harleys (although my bucket list contains a reference) but the one thing you can't take away from them is the cracking engine sound.

I dunno, I had to move a VW Amarok DSG 8 speed demonstrator about 10 miles yesterday. Loved the swift gearchanges, OK it's no Ferrari 458 but it still beats the slushbox in the works Hilux :)

I'm always one for cracking open a window when something tasty is approaching - today on my travels I did exactly that for a 1971 Escort RS in full rally trim and a white Focus RS giving it some. I also had to load and unload a side-pipe AC Cobra, which was nice :)

Some of the jobs they send me on, I *would* pay em to do. I suppose you can describe it as prestige, sports and classic car movements... Kinda what Ted and PhilW do, but with less Fiestas.

I've been thinking of buying one of those to replace the Flymo.

Dog has consumed more grass than your flymo ever will.

Walking round Trafalgar square the other Sunday, a Ferrari stopped at a crossing. I made eye contact with the driver, cupped an ear in one hand and signalled a 'wind it up' with the other. He smiled and obliged by blipping the throttle a couple of times, then shouted 'it costs me a couple of quid every time I do that'.

Depends how you define consumed, I did actually bake a cake with some resin in it once and I was still feeling the effects of it by the next day.

The Mazda, Wankel engined, Le Mans cars. Described as sounding like a donkey's bray.

The pits would applaud when they switched it off!

That sound was as much felt as heard, at least it was from the Esso station on the south perimeter road.

OK confession time. At a time when I was seduced by such things, I had a 3.5 V8 petrol Land Rover 90. ( Defender ancestor ) Hand painted orange, roll bars, bull bars, mahooosive Cibies, Spax adjustables, white wide wheels with General Grabbers, Recaros, Momo steering wheel, ski rack on the roof and and a cherry bomb exhaust pipe. Of course it looked and sounded ridiculous in hindsight. But in alpine tunnels....Oh yes !

:-)

Snap Humph I hand painted orange a VW Beetle didn't look to bad either.>:)

The sound of a Deutz ships engine used to love. The Focus diesel is very quet, neighbours renault sounds like a tractor.

'60s A35. I found that a straight-through replacement silencer was cheaper than a standard one. Lovely raspberry sound!

'70s Vitesse. I had a habit of bashing the rear box on things, it was a big, heavy lump. The centre section box was straight-through with a couple of half baffles. I found a reversed centre section fitted neatly where the back box should be. Straight six yowl!

I must say that when the exhaust fell of my Reliant Regal it transformed the car, making it sound like a V8.

I went the long way to Kwik Fit.

I had a V8 conversion Series III LWB. No other customising at all, it looked just like an ordinary lumbering old landrover. It was fun sometimes giving someone a shock - foot down it would surge forwards like a rhinocerous going into a charge, with a satisfying throbbing burble.
V8s always sound like two engines not quite in sync, getting in each other's way, until suddenly you realise you are running out of road.

But for sheer refined effortlessness the Triumph straight 6 gets my vote.

My current boss has 2 LR petrols, both V8s. One a 3.9 ex police RR engine converted with auto box for a disabled driver, SWB pick up. the other a soft top. They sound lovely, biut after a ride in the former after work last Sunday I could not live with one. 17mpg, noise from everywhere. No thanks.
I barely coped with my Defender 90 300 series for 6 months. Doubt if i could cope with these for 6 days.
