4 mile road to cost £93 MILLION! - zippy
How does a 4 mile single carriageway road end up costing £93m?

I live about 3 miles from the proposed road and would love to see the following infrastructure changes:

1) Dualing the A21 to Tunbridge Wells
2) Widening the rail tunnels so two trains can use them like everywhere else in the country
3) Bypassing Hastings and Bexhill totally and linking up with the A27

But it will never happen, not at £23m per mile!

And chopping down a load of ancient trees along with their grannie hippy occupiers.

Absolutely, that has to be the priority, specially the A21.

Rubbish, the A9 should be the priority.

I remember when I was a kid (admittedly a few years ago) I was told that a mile of motorway cost £1m.

Where does £93m come from!?

It is only costing 93 million because it is a government spending our money, not theirs.

All spending on jockland should be suspended pending the isolationist vote.

Only after independence....please ! ....Let Alec Salmonella shell out for that one !

The A6 through Stockport/Hazel Grove with a link to Manchester Airport would be a lot more useful.

Ah, Ted, the A555 is going to happen!

The money is in place, junctions are being planned. The 'road to nowhere' will go somewhere by the end of 2015. I just hope the new road is not too popular, as the current part constructed road is my favourite road for stretching the cars legs, as it were.

We use the current bit to see chums in Bramhall and it is good for a blast. I don't know about 2015......more optimism ?

How long has this road to nowhere gone there? A long time it seems. And to make sense it not only needs to continue to the airport but also all the way back to Stockport. And that bit back towards Stockport will be expensive and disruptive. Such a short bit exists for now.

The road I assume will link to the south of Stockport on the A6... Will it be worth it? Not sure.

Correct, rtj, it links to the A6 between Hazel Grove and High Lane.

More details of the route are here:

If you live in Hazel Grove (as I do) its going to be worth it.

It's going to be bazzing for us to get out into Derbyshire. Also I have very good pal lives just off the A6 in Yew Tree Ave and my son lives on the racecourse estate.

It'll certainly make a lot off difference for folk getting to the airport from over the Pennines.

I should live long enough, already !
