I make no apologies for advertising this event. I've enjoyed it immensely since I discovered it. I now cheat and catch a train there, the roads get gridlocked it's that popular.

Looks like it may not rain this year!

Good Lord! Is it that time of year already? I must make the effort this year - it's fairly local for me.

If you see a balding, six foot, sixty-odd-year-old who responds to BATHTUB, I'll buy you a pint.

Well that'll narrow it down, can't imagine there being more than 500 geezers looking like that at this event.

I wonder whether they'll call for the men in white coats or MI5 should anyone accost everyone meeting that description with the password Bathtub.

:-)

Blinking shame i'm on shift, would have liked to go.

Just out of interest, I wonder just how many of us here are balding, 6ft and 60-ish?
 classics on the common 31/07/13 - -
Not quite 60 and not balding, however the tanned/ruddy complexion and the now almost white full head of hair make me look like a negative.

Were you "on shift" yesterday morning GB? I passed a very shiny new looking flour tank on the northbound M1 just south of Watford Gap services yesterday just before 11am.

Not guilty MT, off Sunday/Monday.

Most of ours are well presented, its the rufffians behind the wheel who let it all down..:0)

Well, I'm 6'1", lots of hair (blondish, turning to silver) and 68 this week. I would be delighted to fraternise with anyone from c4p. (Anyone who'll have me, that is.)

Are we all going to wear red carnations? Name badges*? "My other car's a Rolls" badges? :-)

* I don't mind announcing myself as FP, but others may be less keen on advertising themselves... Another reason to be wary when choosing internet monikers!

Visited the show last year.

Good

A large number of classic cars (including some American ones). Usually such kind of exhibitions elsewhere attracts entry fee.

Bad

Parking is a problem. There are some side roads with free parking but those are likely to be full by afternoon.

It becomes very crowded. I thought of taking some good photos but I couldn't take picture of any single car without crowd showing up in bad way. So unless you are very early or very late, not much photographing opportunity.

So, I am unlikely to visit this year.

That could be said of any car show. Generally no one about until you whip out your camera, and then you get several muppets standing in the way oblivious that you're trying to take a photo.

Unfortunately, I won't be going this year, but in the past, I've taken the three wheeler, so no problem in parking!

It's a good event as apart from a few owners clubs who arrive together, everything is mixed up. You might find a Mk1 Escort, next to a Porsche 356, next to a Bullnose Morris, next to a Dodge Charger. The first year I went with the Morgan, I was next to a 911, and that was so funny as the owner was visibly upset by the interest my car generated compared to his.

Was it you I had a discussion with about shock absorbers? I was surprised a car of that age had telescopics, I would have expected friction.

Could have been! My car has the original 1930 Newtons, refurbished by me and filled with jack oil (I'm told it's a reasonable grade of oil for them).

Not sure they do now, but in the past VSCC scrutineers have ruled a correct Morgan incorrect as according to them, telescopics are later than the vintage period. They're not though, just not very common.

How can you rub someone up the wrong way by talking about shock absorbers ;)

What we need is an app that will take multiple pictures and stitch bits of each together, automatically editing out the crowds and leaving the car.

There's a million pound idea for someone.

too late, already a feature of some cameras.

Which camera? Panorama is available in lots of cameras but selectively filtering out people seems bit of stretch!

My Fuji HS10 for one. Its called motion remover, moving people removed from photograph.

Interesting. Apparently the camera takes some successive shots and removes objects which are not in all frames.

I wonder which software can do it so that I can achieve same effect in my camera too :-)

Well, I'm not.

I may be a bit busy on Wednesday so unable to make it.

A friend and I, with our respective carers and our cars, did the Chiltern Open Air Museum classic display last weekend at Chalfont St Giles.

I persuaded them that the MX5 is a classic car by promising to get my friend there with his Lagonda. We had a pleasant day and there was a surprising amount of interest in the Mazda, which was a little embarrassing. Future classic I say.

Nothing like as spectacular as the common, but pleasant nonetheless and plenty of chance to chat and take pictures. Some really good stories too, as usual with these things.

The museum itself is OK too - a collection of relocated buildings. My attempt to mention one redolent of the cast iron edifice in Clochemerle resulted in the starring out of an entire paragraph in my first attempt at posting.

So who's going? Who do I look out for? (Apart from BT.)
classics on the common 31/07/13 - FocalPoint
Just got back from it. I got there later than I intended at around 5pm, having had to wait in for a delivery. The weather, which has been rather wet of late round here, relented for the afternoon and, with the sun out between the clouds, it was pleasantly warm on the Common. Lots and lots of lovely cars and lots of people enjoying the show.

I shyed away from the idea of accosting every "balding, six foot, sixty-odd-year-old", so, BT, if you were there, I missed you and didn't get my pint.

Three cars stood out, for me: a gorgeous Alvis in dark red and white, a Vauxhall D-type with polished aluminium bonnet (it was that detail that did it for me) and a Talbot with a boat-shaped body that is probably a hopelessly inefficient use of space, but looks aesthetically perfect.

I was disappointed not to see a Jowett Javelin, which would have been a real bit of nostalgia for me, but a Jowett van (a Bradford?) was leaving as I arrived.

I felt sorry for the miles of near-stationary traffic, which seemed worse when I left at nearly 7. Some people were probably just trying to get home after a normal day's work.

P.S. Just a thought - is it worth having some system in place next year for c4p-ers to meet?

I left around 6pm, it was getting crowded by then. Didn't see any Tatras this year although there was a strange Skoda minibus (apparently none were made available this side of the iron curtain.

A very nice Jag D type replica that was made in the '60s the owner told me when I asked about the absence of an oil tank and a V8 Bentley that I guess was also '60s from the absence of a suffix on its white on black numberplate. It had air-con and what looked like EGR.

Slidingpillar was represented by a JAP engined job (with telescopic Newtons). LKL 50 IIRC.
