To be quite honest Alanović it's a bit flash for me (I'd much prefer grey primer all over including the wheels), and I don't think alloy wheels are suitable for a vehicle like that. No doubt it has a V8 and goes well, but it isn't really designed to go fast and would be a bit hairy at any real speed. I'd have loved it thirty years ago or more. But it's too macho for me now. I like efficient cars you know, even snorting monsters can have an efficient side.

It does look nice but if you want some mental images to help you walk away, then consider that William Hague had one for a start. I can't talk though, I very nearly bought a then only mildly second hand Ford Probe for my wife. Test drove it and everything. Want to think that was a 2.5 V6. Only thing which saved me was Steve Coogan using one as his character Gareth Cheeseman's wheels. Nice though RR, very nice, probably be cheap enough and being a 2.0 won't really be too steamy on running costs...

A bloke I worked with had one. Very unusual situation - I'm sure he was in his late twenties when he passed his test and not a natural driver, he was a family man when he bought it. I was surprised as he liked to keep a low professional profile. He had a drink problem and was fond of "skirt" not that that had a bearing on his choice of car.

However, there do seem to be a decent number of Cougars for sale on ebay and they don't command high prices. They've probably reached the point where values have bottomed out before possibly climbing as the numbers dwindle and I do fancy one. Higher running costs than the budget stuff I tend to favour now, but with a substantial saving on buying price I'd most likely still be quids in over the cars lifetime. I know it's only a Mondeo with a sock down it's pants, but you get a lot of car for not much money and I love the sleek looks compared to the modern tanks of today. Hmmm, now relisted at £450. I didn't read the text posted with the add. I love: "the near side is immaculate as is the boot and 95% of the bonnet" so the bonnet needs fixing as does a lot else. I got rear-ended by an HGV in a hire Fiesta. The front half of the car was probably immaculate too. The car was written off for obvious reasons :-)

They did indeed rally the Marina. In the 70s I had tyres fitted to my Herald that were destined for a rally Marina but never used. Unusual size... 180 x something Goodyear mud and snow tyres. Can't remember if I ever drove it but I didn't like it much. I wanted him to get a Citroen or something else interesting and foreign... but he had special CSMA deals on BL or whatever cars. He replaced it with a Marina 1300 coupé to my mounting scorn... Actually neither car was all bad. The A series engine common to both was eminently tweakable and a lot of owners fettled their examples mildly. Always punched way above its weight IMHO, I have had cars with it in 848, 998, 1098, and 1275cc forms and they all reached decent mileages without any problems.

The Mk 1s had a lifting glass ' hatch ' and a drop down lower panel. They wouldn't have made very good vans with a fixed centre rail for the locks.. The Mk 2 had a fully lifting tailgate as we know it now. Much better for large loads. I think this suspect is a conversion. For one thing it's right hand drive and the side panel seems to be flush whereas on the true van the panel is inset like the original glass. I did the same thing with a cheap, mot fail Mk1 Renault 5, taking out the rear glasses and bonding cut out steel plates in their place. I had it flashed over in white acrylic. It looked good. I used it for some years as a service van. It earned a lot of money and I got £50 back at auction when it needed more welding again. I've some pics somewhere. Replaced it with a white 1986 Simca 1100 van........badged as a Talbot. HO

Now that one's very tasty indeed... nice colour too. Fabulous car in its day, for the rich. I fancied one when I was abusing my cooking R Type... the wheel and facia make me a bit nostalgic. Please note (those interested) the vast great air cleaner filled if I remember correctly with oily crumpled-up chicken wire or something similar. I suppose the carburettors are standard RR SUs but they can't be seen. Nearly half a million quid though for a 60-year-old Rolls-Royce... rebuilt or not, it won't react well to pedal-to-the-metal driving.

I think it was available on late R types, and probably on the Silver Dawn RR model (auto only) sold in the US. But you don't really need it in an R type. Once the car is rolling it steers quite easily. Not as soft as powered steering, but quite manageable. Mind you I did get calluses on my palms when I had it, mainly driving about in London. I didn't mind of course, but a lady might. She would have to wear gloves.

The calluses were caused I think by stopping the wheel from spinning too far or fast under castor return when accelerating out of corners. The wheel is big, to give plenty of leverage, and smooth and shiny... but that action oft repeated will give you calluses. With power steering, castor return seems much better controlled, more damped. The Continental was a lot lighter than the saloon, with many aluminium panels, so the steering was probably lighter too.
