Mitsubishi Carisma - Emissions and MOT - nice but dim
Just had the beast MOT'd and passed. These were the reading from the emissions test, last year and present;

Last year:

Fast Idle
CO - 0.00% Max 0.20%
HC - 2ppm Max - 200ppm
Lambda 1.01 Max 0.97 - 1.03

Nat Idle
CO - 0.17% Max 0.30%

Present:

Fast Idle
CO - 0.20% Max 0.20%
HC - 45ppm Max - 200ppm
Lambda 1.011 Max 0.97 - 1.03

Nat Idle
CO - 0.00% Max 0.30%

I've noticed that the fast idle results this year are much higher and one is right on the limit.

Is that normal to fluctuate that much or does it indicate impending doom?

It indicates you are driving it like a mimser all year. The rev counter goes up to 5, use it.

Only 5?

My limiter doesn't cut in until 6.5-7.

Give it a a can of injector cleaner, few tank fulls of Shell V Power and an Italian tune up and all will be fine !

I thought the half dead drove those cars: the emissions prove it, :-)

ha halfway there madf, just turned 31. Zed, rev counter? I thought that displayed the drivers heart rate per minute. I obey your order to dust the lead boots off.

When your car goes for its next MOT, agree with the garage beforehand that you're going to drive the car hard to get the cat stinking hot, and then, do the emissions test as quickly as possible after you slew into their car park.

If your car was a bit cold during the test this year, that would explain the figures - everything is fundamentally working, but, when the gases are being passed through the cat faster, there isn't enough time for the reactions to go to completion - the cat is getting a bit weak. With a really hot cat, the reactions will be sped up a bit, and you may get it through again.

I had one of these and for a mostly panned car by most people was one of the most reliable cars I have had.

In four years of ownership I had to change only one light bulb ! no tyres, brakes nothing.
Thats the only thing that the car needed.

Mine sailed through every MOT and I was offered to sell the car every time by the garage at each MOT.

jsut my two penny's worth. he he

I really enjoy your explanations N_C, these are things the layman wouldn't necessarily think of.

My Escort's last MoT emissions pass was eventually achieved at 6,000rpm, accompanied by the unmistakeably metallic smell of engine death.
