Askmid database - how long does it take to update? - VxFan

I renewed the insurance on my motorbike last Saturday and was assured by them that it would be on the national insurance database by Tuesday. Left things a couple of days longer and applied on-line for the tax to be told that it's not insured.

I checked again tonight on Askmid ( www.askmid.com ) and it's still telling me that my bike isn't insured.

Just how long does it take for insurance companies to update their records onto the database?

Thanks.

>> dont come from east anglia by any chance?

No, sorry. West Midlands. Footman James actually. Never had any problems with them, but then again never had to make a claim. They have always been prompt in answering the phone, and use a UK call centre.

I was just wondering generally how long insurers take to upload info to the national database. Are they all slow, or is each insurer different?

If I remember correctly, it took about a week for my car to appear insured on the website.

From what I have read in the past, it can vary a lot, and is not terribly uncommon for the details to not get updated at all.

My new old car dads car whoevers car is still showing as insured but my dad canceled it. So I don't know if my its showing it has insured to my dads name or to my name. I have just kept my Corsa policy but changed car.

Confusing post Rattle. If it's insured in your name or your dads on the databases you won't be stopped by the police or caught by ANPR will you. Stop worrying.

AskMID will not have been updated yet but you're covered anyway.

I finally managed to apply on-line to the DVLA for the RFL on Tuesday. Some 10 days (including the weekend) after renewing the insurance policy.

So if it takes a week to update, and people change their insurance company every two years, that suggests that the Orwellian cameras think that 1 in every 100 cars is uninsured.

That surely makes ANPR completely useless.

Wikipedia suggests that Tower Bridge has 40,000 users daily (doesn't sound very many to me, but hey). Lets say 10,000 cars. That's 416 an hour, or one every 20 seconds in each direction.

100 of those do not appear on the database, so - were the police doing their job the way it is reported - 100 motorists would be being kicked out of their cars.

Something doesn't stack up here.

Due to the stupid way insurance companies work these days, daughter just cancelled the auto-renewal of her insurance and took out a new policy online - with the same company, who, for some weird reason, where seeing a different price to us on the online quote. *Argh*

I was dismayed to see her car was showing on AskMID as uninsured - her insurer told me the way that it works is that they immediately send details to MID but it can take up to a week for them to be loaded.

If the Police stop you, the insurance company told me the first they do is ring MID - and they check for updates. If still no good and the driver insists they're insured, then they will call the insurance company - but.... will only give information to the Police if the policyholder agrees, due to te Data protection Act!!! Give me strength.

I've found that if your renewal price quote seems initially too high, if you go on-line and get a cheaper quote from the same company, by cancelling the current insurance cover the on-line price is accepted....

For instance, I've just saved £286 on my house and contents insurance through this method and it's not the first time I've saved a considerable sum of money by doing so.

It seems to update, on average, in about 2 days, but that would still make it 1 in every 350 cars.

I would guess that the data the police get probably includes information about when the vehicle was last insured, so that they can filter out vehicles with a small gap insurance (to cover exactly the situation you raise).

However, that doesn't explain a more basic problem which is that, given the supposed very large number of uninsured drivers, and the number of ANPR cameras, why are they not all caught very quickly.

Even if you just took instances were you had a police vehicle behind you, I would imagine that you get caught very quickly, but then that it usually on busier roads. Perhaps uninsured drivers try to stay away from main routes were they are likely to encounter cameras and police vehicles.

Here is a comment from a police officer about how, at least in his area, ANPR is actually treated.

"ANPR….. I was in the unit that first used ANPR in our farce. Despite technical problems (some days we just could not get it to work), it’s a great piece of kit when it’s up and running properly.

However, as you rightly point out, it generates so much info, so many ‘hits’, that we cannot possibly begin to act on all of it.

In our control room, sorry, Citizen Focus Centre, the ANPR computer terminal used to sit there bleeping out it’s warning every time there was a hit. We did not have sufficient operators to man it, sorry, resource it 24/7 so it was largely ignored. Eventually it was switched off altogether because it annoyed the radio operators.

In the ANPR office (which was part of Traffic, sorry, Roads Policing), we used to come in on Monday mornings and hit the delete button to clear the system of all the hits it had recorded since Friday afternoon. There were usually so many hits that the delete button would be wedged down with a teaspoon until the memory was cleared.

I’m still a big fan of ANPR but agree with you that it’s wasted until we have sufficient resources to act upon the seemingly endles stream of intel/info it provides."

There's a lot of difference between it being used on "auto" and the police calling up to find if the vehicle they've stopped is insured.

I tried to find a means of contact to ASK MID that question myself, but failed to find the means.

Aviva (NUD) says 48 hours.

Which matches with my record being appeared in MID after taking up a new policy.

I think my son insured with Elephant.
Bought a S/H car late Sunday afternoon, insured it over the phone there and we were stopped by BiB early that same Sunday evening. They checked the system and confirmed all documentation was in order.

Hello, BT - it seems you are new to us. Welcome!

I can't answer your question, but someone will probably be along shortly who can.
Askmid database - how long does it take to update? - BobbyG
It will only come off once someone presses the button but no idea of how long that will take.

I update our MID for my employers fleet insurance and its a 2 second job to add or remove. Of course, the ins companies will do this in automated batches.
Askmid database - how long does it take to update? - Ted

My insurance expired at midnight last night. I was concerned that there might be a few days before my renewal appeared on Askmid, in spite of it being with the same company.

I checked this lunchtime and it was showing as insured. I'll check again later in the week just in case that was the old insurance still on there. I check both cars about every two months after last year's panic when the Vitara came up as uninsured six months into the policy causing me to take the car off the road for a few days.

Can't be too careful now with ANPR !

From the MIB:

"....Yes, for privately owned vehicles, the rules state data must be on the MID within 7 days of a policy starting, or 7 days from a change being made to a policy.

For commercial fleet-type policies or motor trade policies it is different. In these cases the data must be on the MID within 14 days of a policy starting or within 14 days of a change being made on the policy.

MIB monitors these targets very closely for every insurance company and they all strive to ensure they exceed these targets so as to avoid any disruption to their policyholders."

".....If the police have stopped your vehicle at the roadside and an element of your MID record needs clarifying, or if you only bought your insurance policy recently and the record has not yet been put onto the MID; the police can contact MIB’s dedicated Police Helpline Team or the insurance provider to discuss your insurance.

The Police Helpline was established in 2007 to act as a liaison between police officers and insurance companies to speedily and efficiently resolve insurance status queries at the roadside so as to inconvenience policyholders as little as possible, and to enable police to more easily establish cases where a lack of insurance and seizure of an uninsured vehicle is required.

Either of these two functions will allow the police officer to discuss your insurance details and determine whether you are or are not driving with insurance."

Whole lot more here:

www.mib.org.uk/Frequently+Asked+Questions/en/Default.htm

So I would say that if they are allowed a maximum of 7 days to upload renewals then potentially there could also be a 7 day gap before cancellations are also uploaded.
