Vehicles no longer seen on our roads........not makes, but adapted for specialist use.
Plenty to see at Steam and old car rallys but some have now passed from memory until jogged by something.

I was gricing my new copy of Model Rail over morning coffee when I came across the advert from Oxford Models, who make excellent scale model cars.
One rarity caught my eye and jogged that memory......A gown van.

tinyurl.com/3yguuqa

Used to see them in the 50s and 60s but I suppose they weren't needed when the taller vans, like the Transit came in.
For our younger viewers, these were coachbuilt on a small van chassis, often an Austin A55, to be used by specialist dressmakers and tailors for transporting long dresses and ballgowns without the need to fold them.

I suppose new materials and lack of formal dances hastened their demise.

Any other oddball stuff remembered but not seen for years ?

Did the paint really look that good back in the black and white days? Or is that modern paint respray / finish + treatments making it look good?

Probably just something weird happening with my computer, but a few seconds after opening that link, my computer proceeded to open about another 50 internet explorer windows, continuing to do so until I used task manager to shut down the whole lot.
It seems to be a photobucket link, so unless someone has hacked them, I can't see how it can be an attack of any kind.

Don't see many 'invalid carriages' - the pale blue-green fibreglass thingies - anymore.

Affectionately know as something-or-other chariots in my youth - but the word escapes me for some PC reason.....

I know it's not quite the same but Bass used to have several Daimler chassis with bodies shaped like beer bottles. If I could do pix I'd find a link.

Not for seven years. "On 31 March 2003 it became illegal to drive an Invacar on British roads."

Hey ! That's me Grandpa out for the day showing off his new 2 seater !

I'd like to present that for an MOT . The Jowett was bad enough...nearly couldn't test 'cos the make didn't come up on screen.....Jaguar, Jenson, nothing. We were on the verge of phoning VOSA.... Found a bit where he could type it in and all was ok .

Good job I haven't got a Graf und Stift or something really odd !

Ted

Edit...The pic of the Bass lorry comes up ok for me......on something called Orbit.
Still P>Bucket, though.

doesn't even have to be that old, most insurance systems won't recognise Commer either, and if I had a pound for everyone who had come up to me and said "Is it a Volkswagen?", I'd be posting from Barbados.

Yeah, I'd be there with you, CD.
My cash would come from everyone who comes up at shows and tells me she's based on the Beetle but with a two stroke engine in the back

Should have a big boxing glove on a spring in the boot and tell them to check out the engine !

Two long gone memories revived by this thread. During the 39/45 conflict we had a regular appearance at the licensed premises next door but two to our houae in Erdington of a Sentinel Steam Dray run by Butlers of Wolverhampton. That brewery had several of these trucks which did vital war work keeping the beer flowing to the munition makers.

Ted -- Your mention of the Jowett brings brings back visions of Jupiters and Javelins on the pavement outside Frank Grounds establishment in Lichfield Road, Aston close to the Railway station. He was a competitor in many rallies of that era and also his wife in I think, the Jupiter, in the Monte Carlo and the Dutch rally (Tulip?) in the early fifties.Cannot bring her name to mind.

In this colour I thought it was a quicker way to get to the afterlife.

A recent one with a roof rack - ugh

In the 1950s and 1960s the Scammell Scarab in British Rail livery was a common site. Highly manoevarable, was used for parcel delivery in towns.

Another obsolete vehicle is the limousine pump. Been trying to find a pic. Some nice coachbuilt ones made in the 30s on commercial chassis. Often without ladders but with a powerful pump and seating for firemen like a mini-bus. Make a nice big family estate car or campervan now, if you could find one.

My stepfather was a fireman during the Hitler spat and told of driving a Leyland Merryweather turntable escape down to London from Manchester in the blitz to give aid to the LFB. Must have been frightening fighting fires in narrow streets lined with tall burning buildings ! Later he remained in the AFS, enjoying his yearly visits to Moreton in Marsh where he was in charge of a Bikini unit for training.
This was an appliance kitted out with floating pumps for extracting and pumping water from lakes/canals/rivers.

...yearly visits to Moreton-in-Marsh...

That'll be the Fire Service Training College.

Passed it many times in the car as a child.

You can see some of the scorched concrete shell buildings from the road.

Looks like they now do conferences and all sorts:
