Just starting-looks like they are on the hunt to restore an escort mexico tonight

Thanks...!

Thanks II. Watching it right now.

p.s. roll bar, go-faster stripes? someone punch him!

I had a MK1 1100DL, TFN 29H, awful thing, was quicker to run !

Goodness, I had forgotten the irritation of adverts.

Although I do rather fancy elderflower Gin.
 For the love of cars C4 8PM - R.P.
What adverts ? There's a couple of immaculate MK1s around here...and a rather scruffy one. Someone up the road has a rather nice looking MK2 sitting on Rostyles as well. Yellow...same colour as the Ka..

>>What adverts ?

Well, assuming that I'm watching the right thing, I get stuck with the adverts as well as the program.

Not very impressed so far !
For the love of cars C4 8PM - No FM2R
No, its a bit fluffy.
For the love of cars C4 8PM - mikeyb
At least they talked him out of the roll bar and spot lights!

I've given it the el bow, plus the adverts always do it (in) for me.

I was pulling Skip's leg...a phone call and getting a beer delayed the start so I had 5 minutes in hand to FF through the adverts lest I see a small Volvo parked anywhere inappropriate...

I was wondering how you had managed to unwrap a new video tape so quickly, used to take me ages!

Mk 1 Escort Mexico was a very nice off-the-peg hotshoe special, in standard trim discreet looking except to an appreciative eye. It had a lovely small version of the Ford twin cam and went like a rocket. No need for RS 2000 or RS 1800 at all, for road use.

Meh, maybe. For around town use, even for country road use, perhaps. But the advent of dual carriageways pretty much screwed the Mexico as a viable pursuit vehicle.

Because of my huge bias towards programmes in English, and programmes about cars, I shall get to the end of this episode. I can't see that'll I'll seek out another episode though. Its kind of lightweight and naff.

Same here. Car SOS is the best of the bunch now IMHO, Classic Car Rescue is just awful and Wheeler Dealers is getting a bit stupid and far fetched.

>> a viable pursuit vehicle.

It wasn't one of those.

It was a small semi-invisible modestly sporting saloon or coupé. Economical, rapid and discreet. Not a 'pursuit vehicle' FFS! That would be bigger and altogether more sort of menacing. Of course I like those too.

I agree, but that's how they are talking of it.
For the love of cars C4 8PM - No FM2R
They are going on and on about the speed and performance of a vehicle which was 0-60 in 11 seconds and a top speed of just about 100mph.

Which is not to say that it is not very pretty and full of history and character, its just not that fast in the real world.

Reminded me though - when I was a kid I bought some grocery item..possibly Corn Flakes and there was a model of a Escort Mexico - tiny little thing no more than 50mm, yellow soft plastic, self assembly - boy how I loved it though.
For the love of cars C4 8PM - Runfer D'Hills
I had a mk1 Escort 2 door.

Unfortunately not exactly a Mexico. It was an 1100 L or Pop or whatever the most austere version was. And it was beige.

Loved it though.

I had a Mk1 in Mexico orange, it might have been an 1100, unless there was a smaller, and even more useless, engine available, in which case it was that one.

I had a bit of chipboard in place of the driver's floor.

At least that wouldn't rust.
For the love of cars C4 8PM - No FM2R
Got pretty soggy going through puddles though. And turns out chip board didn't do soggy very well.

Mine had some obscure radial remoulds on it which used to randomly shed tread blocks and some previous owner had cut bits of purple-ish swirly 1970s style sitting room carpet to fit the interior.

I think it also had some underbonnet issues. It was definitely only an 1100 but 22 mpg was the best I ever got out of it.

However, in its defence, it never actually broke down or failed to start. On acceleration it sounded like you were shakng a bag of spanners.

Great fun in snow though where it spent a lot of one winter transporting me and others to Glenshee and Aviemore on every affordable weekend. I liked to think the missing tread blocks helped to give it a more aggressive winter tread pattern.

I don't think I ever really knew the mpg of anything I owned. I could never afford to put enough petrol in it to be able to work it out with any accuracy.

I do remember when the days arrived and I could start using those wonderful words "fill it up". And then they made petrol stations self-service so that joy didn't last long.

I'd noticed in the Radio Times this would be on and had high hopes. What a disappointment... less than 5mins of interest in the whole hour. I have a slight fondness for the Mk.1 having started my driving lessons in parents new 1300xl estate in met british racing green. A very direct and easy car to drive but it hated 25-30mph in top which was a small part in my first test fail.

You mean there was something before the '80s Constant Vibration and Harshness (CVH)?

Years ago a friend had an Escort Harrier. Think it was a standard 1300 with different trim but could be wrong. That was followed by a Mexico and. I followed suit with an RS2000 twin headlight model bought off another friend. Had it modified for road rallying with up rated suspension, a few engine mods, LSD and bag tank in the boot. Failed miserably as I did not have the bottle to push it that hard. Sold it far too cheaply when I replaced it with an imported RHD Golf Gti mk1 in metallic green from some bloke in Wakefield serving with BFPO on the Rhine.
That was a car and a half, way ahead of its time despite only a 1600 engine.

I shared a house with a friend who had a Harrier and the biggest F Off pair of Cibies ever made. I thought it was a 1600....memory might be fading. Lovely headrests (netting)...happy days.
For the love of cars C4 8PM - Fenlander
Harrier was a 1600 Sport with some RS body/trim bits.

Friend had the met purple 1300E Mk.i as briefly seen in the Glenister programme... then moved to the 1600 Ghia Mk.II which was very "woody" inside and a softer car despite being quicker.

My first car was a wanabee rally car - 1300 Mk1 with big arches. But it was rotten . Slowly bodged it to something like with a zillion brazing rods and stuck a 1600 pushrod in. :S. Then wrapped it round a telegraph post big time. But that was where I learned my mechanical skills. Oh and a couple of endorsements to boot. Replaced with another Mk 1 and stuck the best bits on recovered from my wreck. At which point my new career meant I had to be Capt Sensible.
Roll on 10 years and the car of my dreams a MK2 RS2000 became mine complete with highly modified engine running on twin 48 sidedraughts. It sounded awesome. Turned it back to standard and flogged the go faster bits. But the rally scene beckoned and off it went to fund a proper Mk2 2Ltr rally car with all the clubman bits. And fun was had until replaced by a FWD Astra 16V GTE. Then a house move and kids so that was that.
Turned my misspent youth experiences into something constructive and got paid to drive some pretty decent motors. Now I get rid of adrenaline on 2 wheels. But there is something inside me wants to build, preferably, a full house Mk1 or more likely a Mk2.
