Tyre fitting for beer money - VxFan
Looks like I'm going to have to shop around. The local outfit (ATS) are doing things entirely by the book now and I can no longer get a tyre fitted and balanced for £10 a corner.

My rear tyre had a nail in it and it's too close to the edge for it to be repaired. Fortunately I had a part worn tyre in the garage loft and they fitted that instead of having to fork out for a new tyre. The shocker came when I was presented with a £23 just to change the tyre and balance it!

My usual and trusted tyre garage won't fit 2nd hand tyres otherwise I would have used them instead.

What ever happened to the good old days of slipping someone some beer money to do the job?

It disappeared when the liability & sue culture appeared.

I've always just done it myself. Test it on a front wheel - if it wobbles, get it balanced. If not, don't.
