The car took just over two minutes, while driving uncrewed , to complete a lap of the Hockenheim Grand Prix track.

"Additionally the driver has a chance to relax. That means they are on full alert as soon as their attention is required again."

I don't think that's how it works! AF447?

Or more recently, another fine mess that didn't actually end in disaster.

First we had the misleading 'Lied' about crash testing; now we have a 'record' - and still we have no music from Audi. This isn't fair. Stop it!

Driver-less F1 next year? :)

Full sized Scalextric, the money saved on drivers would more than cover the cost of the control systems. I don't think the current drivers would be impressed at being beaten by computer game geeks or the drop in pay.

Only if they go around the tracks one at a time.

A question:

How long ago was this kind of technology 1st being developed?
And who by?

I will post the answer (as I understand it) later....

All the major car makers. All the main techie groups. Ever since it occurred to them, long before we thought of it.

Self-driving cars are pants and always will be.

I remember that around 1992/93 or so, Mercedes had a self-drive test mule that could handle simple autobahn manoeuvres like lane changes and overtaking etc. The brains were an IBM RS/6000 stuffed into the boot of (IIRC) an S-class.

I've no idea if they were the first to do so.

Wasn't there some sort of Europe wide project on these lines. I want to think it was called Prometheus, but i could be wrong.

Nah, KARR (Knight Automated Roving Robot) came before KITT did.

If you looked at the link Swiss Tony provided you'd see a video of the Jaguar/Lucas car that was part of the Prometheus project.

Now what that seems to do is available on mainstream cars. The next step forward will probably be Mercedes and the S-Class.

Old hat, anyone remember Clarkson in the self driving BMW?

The Google car can do it in traffic.

Look at the 'conversation' between driver and car in this short piece (after the Knight Rider flashback):

Frightening :)
