Route Advice - Bugbrooke to Devonport - Bromptonaut
Off to see Miss B and her Beau tomorrow. Their pad is close by Devonport dockyard, we're in Bugbrooke, a village just by M1 J16

Routes from here to Plymouth seem to be:

(a) Through lanes to M40 J11 then M40>M42>M5>A38

(b) A5>A43>M40>A34>M4>M5>A38

(c) A5>A43>M40>A34>A420>Swindon>M4>M5 etc.

Which does panel think is best, or are there ideas we've missed?

Start early. The roads are murder these days.

No idea what the best route would be. (a) looks reasonable.

A38 is a good road I'd go with a.

I'd stick with the morways Bromp. Once you've finally got that Berlingo wound up to 70 you don't want to be backing off do you?

;-)

This trip's allocated to her 'lingo. Steady 80 is a real possibility.

But then there's the fuel burn to consider....

Times?

Isn't a: going north when you want to go south?
b: is good but gets too close to oxford for my taste
c: isn't the a420 the source of the current oxford traffic woes?

Need to be in Devonport not before 17:00 when her chap's home from work. She's working with a blood donation session until later.

>> Isn't a: going north when you want to go south?

Yep. It's a Great Way Round. Like Paddington to Exeter via Bristol rather than down the Berks and Hants line; longer but at least potentially faster.

>> b: is good but gets too close to oxford for my taste

Anything other than (a) is close to Oxord.

Yup .

I guess you don't mean Devonport in Tasmania.....

(c) would be the nearest to the line a self-respecting crow would fly, but it depends where the tinpot tyrants are digging up the A420. If it's between the A34 and Oxford (as it was last time I was near there), you're OK turning off the A34 westwards onto the A420.

But if the diggers are also west of the A34, going down to J13 of the M4 won't take much longer.

(a) is too near Birmingham as well as going north-west when you want to go south-west.

The A420 trouble spot I know about is in Headington - about 3 o'clock on the ring road, where they're laboriously remodelling the junction where the A40 motorway feeder meets the Eastern Ring Road and the A420 sets off towards the city centre. Is there more to the west of there?

There certainly was, although I've avoided that area for the pat few months. They were faffing about on the A423 ring road near the A34 junction for ages, and then they started digging up the A420 through Botley. But I think Bromp may be OK turning off the A34 to go SW on the A420 towards Swindon.

>> The A420 trouble spot I know about is in Headington
I was through there late Sun night / Mon morning last week.
The roundabout seems to be finished BUT there is a section of the A420 between the roundabout and Headington centre that is single alternating flow , traffic light controlled. I suspect this causes a significant problem in normal hours.

no good telling him now, he is stuck in it.

He might want to try it again next week :-)

Variation on (a) in end.

Needed to drop my car off in Daventry for repairs after it's Xmas encounter with car park barrier. Then via Southam to join M40 at Gaydon and great way round, M42/M5 etc. A few minor hold ups but nowt serious. Left Dav at one and here at six with three stops including sainsbury on A38 at Plymouth for supplies and top up of diesel.
