Stobart have named their first lorry after a man, breaking a long tradition.

What about all the other soldiers?

To be murdered is a terrible thing. Bu why single out a single murder victim? What about those who died in battle? What about those who died being brave?

Etc. etc.

I think its wrong. I have my doubts that its genuine though.

Agreed

Its very cynical exploitation.

Call a lorry Mary Jane or Emma or Charlotte and it can stand forever, no further thought or justification necessary.
Start calling them after real people in the news and you need a monitoring department to keep in touch with public opinion of how those individuals are currently viewed.

There will be campaigns to honour people who have been omitted, to rectify some alleged sex or colour bias, or to remove anyone whose reputation has become tarnished.

I can't see the problem with it. It's a memorial, and a temporary one at that.

I hope the family feel good about it, I have no problem with that side of it.

My issue is that it appears for a memorial one needs to die when the Daily Mail is looking. Somebody could have died in much worse, or more outrageous, circumstances but is not valued, or memoralised (if that's a word), solely because it wasn't blasted high and low by the UK media.

And that does bother me.

Though, I guess better anyone rather than no-one.

If it was £1m of public money being used for a statue in Trafalgar Square I'd agree, but it's a name on a lorry isn't it?

Hardly a new idea though. All fire engines are named Dennis.

...and their ladders are called Simon Snorkel.

A really *good* name, that.

It saddens me to see people making fun of a tribute, however small, to someone who would have risked his life to protect you.

You come across as people who would cry for your mummy at the thought of doing anything dangerous to serve your country.

Having read through the article (as I'd guess many didn't going by some of the replies) it seems that Lee Rigby's father drives for Stobart's and the lad himself had intended to follow before he joined the Army.

So, a nice gesture to an employee's dead son and an advertising boost for a worthy cause. Bad cess to all the naysayers.

Bet it don't end up doing too many trips to Bradford though.

I saw this truck at the weekend in Swansea or somewhere. Thought it was a nice touch.

I thought they had named one after a bloke before though. It was featured in one of the Channel 5 shows they used to do.

" Valentino " named after Valentino Rossi.
