Good in his eyes.
If the base price goes/stays down, he can more easily raise the tax on it..

It would be a good moment to abolish road tax entirely and shift it on to fuel duty.

Just retain a basic register of car ownership, and then most of DVLA could be scrapped too.

I think road tax should be split into 2 parts.
Part 1 should be based on the physical size of the vehicle, the more road you occupy the more tax you pay.
Part two should be on fuel.
Whilst i'm at it why not tax caravans and trailers !

Don't expect that to last.

I missed the Edit and gave up.

I was going to add "I know it is old news but the seed has been sown and it has been mentioned in Auto Express recently.

See my earlier post.

Good in his eyes.

Really? Revenue from fuel duty has been pretty constant at around £27bn since 2010-11. But falling oil prices mean less Petroleum Revenue Tax (down by half to barely £1bn in the same period), less VAT on fuel sales, and less Corporation Tax as oil production becomes less profitable.

So it may be less a case of wanting to raise fuel duty than of having to.

The Chancellor knows the market will stand £1.20-£1.30 a litre fuel prices, so he would be daft not to take advantage of any price drop to raise duty. With the backdrop of challenging public finances, and the recent duty freezes, it would seem to be a pretty low risk way of making a few extra quid.

Not read the detail in that article but prices here are around 5p/litre above the late winter low.

To his mind good I think, but I don't understand such things.
