Are Ford Auto boxes any longer lived now than in the likes of the 2.9 Granada Ghia I bought in the late 80's?

It seemed some fell over about the 60k mark.

The majority of those auto boxes failed at around the 60k mark. I dont know what the later TC boxes are like, but avoid the current automated manual Powershift as they are starting to give the same problems as the VAG DSG ones.

What sort of problems are they giving, Skip? I ask because our S-Max Powershift is coming up to 57,000 with no apparent issues.

Jatco autoboxes are very good, as fitted to, um, Subaru's etc.

Just saying, like.

Isn't that based on the DAF rubber band technology, as used in snowmobiles and garden tractors.? :-)

Nay ON, the Jatco's I'm referring to are good ole fuel-guzzling slush boxes.

Sorry, I thought that they used CVTs these days.

Jatco do indeed produce CVT's these days, but my old jalopy is eight years young.

Had a focus on hire that was auto so I assume the powershiftbox.

Wasn't overly impressed - for a car with less than 10K on it. Made a few duff changes and thunked through gears on a few occasions - didn't feel like it would be long lived

Granada/Scorpio of this age should have a A4LD(4 Speed)-earlier models would have had BW35/C3/C4(all 3 speed).

Wot, there's an Aisin autobox in your Saab? .. must be down to a lack of fluid changes then?

When I got my Subaru nigh-on 2.5 years ago, I didn't check the fluids before I brought it home, thinking they would do all that (hahaha!) but when I got it home and checked the oil, the stuff was as black as Newgate's knockers and the ATF was brown with a burnt smell (OMFG!)

It came with a years warrantee (more hahaha! but I changed the oil straight away and then changed the ATF about five times so as to completely flush the old stuff out.

The jamjar and the gearbox has been as right as rain (Cornish link) since, and I have no plans to replace the critter any time soon.

I'll reply in the other thread rather than divert this one.
