I have managed to find out that it is still taxed and would love to find out where it is and perhaps let the owner have a photo of it with my Dad on the day he bought it new. It was a lovely F reg (1960something, not an '80's one) Jag.

Tell DVLA you are a clamper and you need the address of its owner. You might need to pay a small fee.
Bingo, there you go :)
Looking at old Jaguar forums may be a starter.

check out the various owners clubs, someone on there is bound to know the car

It seems to me DVLA records are more public than private these days.
One shouldn't tell fibs, but I suppose you could tell the DVLA the reg no was left on an anonymous note on your car after it was damaged in a car park.
You might not even have to pay.
Or you could be honest and ask the DVLA if they will pass on a letter to the registered keeper, which you will let them read first.
Government agencies are not usually good at stuff like that, but I expect they've had similar requests before, so there might be a procedure in place.

...it's legal...tell the truth...
As a private citizen, the OP must show 'reasonable cause' to the DVLA.
According to the website, some of the circumstances considered to be reasonable cause include:
* matters of road safety
* events that occur as a result of vehicle use
* the enforcement of road traffic legislation
* the collection of taxes
Doesn't look too promising, does it?
It is to be hoped the key wording is 'some of the circumstances', and the DVLA will help in some way.
Asking them to pass on a letter still sounds good to me.

ifithelps you tell them you are doing a mileage check and so need to have this information-
its that simple

...ifithelps you tell them you are doing a mileage check and so need to have this information...
Will they take that from a private citizen?
If so, job done, as you say.
