......one of the seven deadly sins, but it's one from which I'm suffering!
Our daughter and son-in-law have just bought a 2016 , 22 miles, pre-registered Hyundai i40 Tourer for £14K. It look a smart and attractive car in white, and has made me dissatisfied with our 2002 Jazz CVT.
Pathetic old fool, I am. No snide remarks please:-).
Yet I'm now perusing Autotrader looking for a car which is (a) automatic. (b) petrol, (c) a touch bigger than the Jazz ,(d) easy to get in and out of, (e) under 50,000 miles, and (f) not more than our car (about a grand according to WBAC et al.) + about £3K.
Not an easy answer to be had.
(I still have to persuade SWMBO though, and that is the hardest task of all)

Howls about an 'onda Civic, Dodger.

Without looking under 50K auto for less than 4K but bigger than a Jazz sounds difficult to achieve.

I'm guessing something less popular will be your best bet

I take it back - more to choose from than I expected

Nissan Note

I40. I had one as a hire car in January this year. Base spec diesel model but still reasonably well equipped but it really needed parking sensors as its a bit or a barge to park.

Drove well but wasn't as frugal as I thought it would be.

Dodger, Suzuki SX4 07, Orange, £3750. 10 miles from you.

Ford C-Max is doable. Easiest car to access I have ever owned. Plenty of room for the the grandchildren.

Thank you all for your suggestions :-)

...................and Pride (in a new car) cometh before a fall:-

A sad phone call from my daughter this morning "Dad - I think our new car is probably written off".
On her way to work this morning, tootling along a a major(ish) Northern Irish road, approaching a crossroads with a minor road, a car pulled out straight in front of her and she T-boned it.
She says she had right of way on the main road,
No damage to either her, or the other driver, who to her, admitted responsibility.
The police attended, but she is not sure if liability was admitted to them.
Her dash-cam was working and hopefully will provide supporting evidence.
We shall see.
A shiny 250 mile Hyundai i40 Tourer bites the dust.
 Envy............ - commerdriver
Nasty one, glad she's OK though, that's what's most important.

Tell her that the new car with state of the art crash protection saved her from serious injury!

Money well spent and she is so much more important than the car!
 Envy............ - Focal Point
Glad she's OK.

The dashcam may help recover her excess.
 Envy............ - smokie
Blimey, that didn't last long!! Glad no-one was injured.

After you initially posted about it I had a look at the i40, and I could be tempted. I have no real parameters or deadline for my next car, it could be next week or next year. Once I fond something I can get ion with I'll probably take the plunge. The i40 is deffo on my (rather long) shortlist.

Which is the main thing of course. If she had bought a car in a lighter colour this not have happened.

I'd be hoping it is written off. Even it is deemed repairable I'd not particularly want to keep a car which had sustained severe front end damage. Glad no one was injured. Sounds like it could have been very nasty.

Glad she's okay. And the car probably has saved her from injury - although she's probably a bit sore.

That car might be fixable given how new it is etc but if it was mine I'd want it written off. It's done a good job of protecting the occupants and could you trust it to be okay?

Glad everyone is OK, but looking at the picture I reckon thats repairable

It's a Nextbase.
I'm not sure of the model, but Halford's stock the range.
It's a bit fancier than our own Nextbase, as theirs shows speed and GPS location: ours does not, but is easier to remove from the car, as it has a simple pull off the mount action. Power, on ours, is fed to the mount rather than the camera directly.

I've since learnt that in their new (dead) car, they have a rear facing dash-cam, too.
Boy's toys, but her husband is an avionics technician!

(I'm tempted to get a rear facing camera, too!)

"Anyone criticise dash-cams, now?"

Struth, Roger, that should put a stop to any argument about who was to blame! Sorry to read about the crash, but pleased that your daughter is OK.
 Envy............ - zippy
And she was going well under the speed limit.

Just goes to show these cameras should be fitted to cars as standard and for the real £100 or so a good one should cost and not £300-500 that some seem to think they will cost as an optional extra!
 Envy............ - Stuartli
Just shows you how easily you can be involved in an accident and it not be your fault. Glad she escaped potential serious injuries thanks to modern car design.

Reckon they'll repair the i40. It was somewhat of a glancing blow, not full head-on. Guess it depends on whether the engine block has been damaged or pushed back in to the bulkhead?
 Envy............ - Bromptonaut
Blimey oh whotsits!

When Roger said pulled out my immediate thought was other driver who 'looked but didn't see' and pulled off from a stop. Looks there more like either Agila (?) driver temporarily incapacitated or brake failure/go pedal mistaken for stop.

No chance of avoiding.
 Envy............ - rtj70
Well the other driver's insurance can't claim she was even partly to blame from that footage can they. I've thought this functionality should be standard on cars - with more and more cars with front facing cameras then it must be easy to implement.

Talking of camera, watched a cool demo of the surround camera on a new BMW 5 series yesterday. With the phone app you can look around the car from all angles remotely. Cool. Although the car unlock/start remote functionality would be a worry when you buy second hand - how do you make sure the previous owner can't access the car!
 Envy............ - Pat
Certainly was a nasty one Roger and could have been much worse, pleased to hear she is OK.

Excellent dashcam footage though and leaves no question as to who is to blame thankfully.

 Envy............ - Bobby
If it is written off I hope they are fully recompensed.
Have heard some stories of poor payouts where cars have been low mileage but not bought new.
If buy new I think you get a brand new replacement within a year on most policies.
But if bought used, even at a young age, can sometimes lead to lots of haggling (unless dealer was sitting with a job lot of them and she can go back for another)
 Envy............ - Roger.
Although not on the drip, I think they took out some form of gap insurance on buying the car.
They paid £14K for it as a pre-reg 2016 w ith 22 miles on it. I think the new/unregistered price, discounted, is around the £18K + mark.
The insurance co. say that if repairs are more than 65% of the car's value (but WHICH value?) they will normally write off.
The supplying dealer still has one or two left at this price, but if they go, it would be a struggle to replace the car for an insurance co. write off figure based upon the actual purchase price.
 Envy............ - rtj70
It's probably repairable if the front crash structure has done it's job but won't be cheap. Engine will almost certainly be removed before repairs attempted.

When I had a glancing blow to the front of my old Passat in 2002 I thought it might be a right off. It was fixed but the engine was removed. And within a year I got problems with airbag warning lights... maybe never totally fixed. May have been unrelated as the airbags did not trigger in the accident.
 Envy............ - Manatee
Entirely possible it will be written off and repaired. As a no-fault, repair claim will include hire car costs for the duration of any repair, and on such a new car the salvage will have a material value. They may well settle as a write off, sell the salvage to somebody who repairs it at leisure, and it will be back on the road as a Cat C or D.

Repairs won't need to exceed the cost of the car for it to be written off. 50% is probably enough.
 Envy............ - Roger.
Talking of Cat C and Cat D - there are quire a few advertised on Autotrader. Some, to me, do not seem cheap enough for the undoubted disadvantage of having been written off.
Have any of you bought such a car and what is the implication of insurance premium rates for Cat C or Cat D?
 Envy............ - Manatee
I've never knowingly bought one, although many years ago I thought about it. I knew a second hand dealer who specialised in Escort estates. He used to buy crashed ones but re-shelled them all. Because he concentrated on them he got sufficiently good at it for it to be worth doing.

I thought one of those would be massively preferable to a repaired one, but these were late 70s/early 80s cars and I think it would be much riskier now that cars have so many bits that, frankly, not many people understand.
 Envy............ - Dog
My sisters boy (60!) made his money from repairing insurance wright orfs, put the money into buy2lets and is now comfortably numb orf.

I bought a Toyota Supra from him in the previous century and had no problems wivvit apart from the windscreen surround chrome strip flying orf when I was doing 130mph down the M20.

I've seen a lot of his work over the last 30 years, including the old Jaaags & Mercs he's restored, and cannot fault 'em.

Gotta be careful of course and know what you're doing if considering buying such a vehicle.
 Envy............ - bathtub tom
I know folk who bought repaired write offs. They seem to suffer from the same problems as all accident repaired cars - corrosion.

I suppose the same anti corrosion measures can't be applied to repaired or replaced panels as that done in the factory when new.
 Envy............ - Roger.
It turns out that both the cars involved in my daughter's "incident" are covered by the same insurance company. Double whammy for them.
Daughter has a courtesy car - a KIA Sportage.
The other driver has apparently admitted responsibility to the insurers, so the dash-cam evidence will not be needed, but is there if circumstances alter.
 Envy............ - zippy
>> Some, to me, do not seem cheap enough for the undoubted disadvantage of having

Totally agree. I was browsing Autotrader a few months back when looking to switch from my company car and was looking at lots of different types of car.

When putting in age / mileage combinations one would have expected the CAT C and D cars to be a lot cheaper but some were only £500 or so cheaper than the equivalent OK car and some were even more expensive!

I was looking between the £10k to £15k bracket and would have expected a 20% to 30% discount at least for a written off repaired car? What do other forum members think?
 Envy............ - Roger.
Well, stone the blooming crows!

>>But also means the hire car goes back on Monday.

No.

It is reasonable that you take some time after the money has been received to actually obtain a replacement car. Not a long time, but a week or so is fine. Perhaps even two, depending on the car and its availability.

Worth confirming with your actual insurer, of course.
 Envy............ - Roger.
The kids visited the repairers this morning to collect the boot mat and dash cams cables.
The parts alone, including, of course new airbags, would come to £10,760.65, + labour to fit and repair fully.

The car cost them £14K

i115.photobucket.com/albums/n297/penfro/Public/Smasharoo1_zpslhrqbjgt.jpg

That's what a 30mph impact can do!

I think both drivers were fortunate not to have been hurt more seriously than a couple of bruises.

Modern cars are built to crumple in a smash - the Hyundai i40 sure did.

They are, subject to the insurance funds arriving as promised, due to pick up an identical replacement from the original dealer who has a few left at £14K, (just 1 digit difference in the number plate) next Wednesday, with no financial loss to them.
 Envy............ - Runfer D'Hills
Sounds like a happy ending to an unfortunate story. I'd be glad they aren't repairing it and if they can get a new exact replacement without cost, then that's the best possible outcome.
 Envy............ - BiggerBadderDave
£13k to glue a new bumper on? Fudge me. Ed China could do that few quid. Well, I hope she gets it all resolved without too much hassle.

How’s the other driver? Quite an impact, indeed. Probly caused her glass eye to shoot out, did she find it in the footwell? So was she/he/it texting? Aaaahhh, that’s why she admitted responsibility straight away, doesn’t want anyone investigating her phone activity does she? Especially since we know the very second it all happened. The camera never lies, neither does an itemised phone bill.

Just a theory, of course...
 Envy............ - Dog
I'll take a wild guess and say the other car was red :o
 Envy............ - Old Navy
The red paint will come off with a bit of Tcut. :-)
 Envy............ - Roger.
Daughter picked up her new, new, i40Tourer last Wednesday.
Admiral bank-transferred the full amount of the claim to her on Tuesday.
(I guess the speedy payout was due to both drivers being insured by Admiral, so no inter-company argy-bargy)
One happy Hyundai dealer - two cars sold!

Good point. I have also heard that premiums will go up even if the driver wasn't at fault and that extra cost can be claimed from the at fault party.

I would guess that the Roger's daughter's policy didn't pay out for the write off and is therefore still in force and can just be switched over to the new car.

If it were her fault and her car was written off then the policy would terminate at that point.

Happy to be corrected if my understanding is wrong.
 Envy............ - Roger.
The other driver's policy paid out, AFAIK.
We'll have to see about premiums at renewal.
 Envy............ - mikeyb
Think it will go up to some degree as she will have to declare a claim at renewal time. My understanding was that a claim is a claim so carries and increased risk for the insurer.

My insurance is up for renewal next month - I was with Allianz but they have just advised me they will no longer be selling car insurance direct so will not even be offering me a quotation - I will just get proof of NCB and have to look around (which I would have done anyway)
 Envy............ - Bromptonaut

That was certainly my experience with a no fault claim (car park barrier fell on my car).

Can't you then claim the cost from the other party?

I haven't Roger, but as an aside, the average mpg on that car is quoted as 35 point something. In real life I'd be surprised if it breaks 30 mpg. Are you sure that would be acceptable to you in the longer term?
 Envy............ - Bromptonaut
Agree with Runfer on mileage. We hired on, manual though, on a fly drive to Western Isles in 2009.

Even Stornoway lacks any real urban traffic and there's little single track left on main roads either. Doubt we got much over thirty to gallon.

Praise where due.
Halfor's Autocentre have examined the Jazz, after I complained about a judders under braking. Turns out that one of the two discs they fitted last August has warped slightly.
They are going to replace both discs and fit new pads under their warranty. No arguments at all.
I'll probably keep the car a bit longer now, as I was concerned the problem may have been a more serious fault, causing £££ to fix.
Next mot is August, so we'll see then, or just before.
