More locally known as The Buttertubs Pass (Cliff Gate Road). Runs between Hawes and Thwaite in North Yorkshire. Legacy's patch
I dont know when this piece of road first came to my notice - maybe when Clarkson drove a 'Cosser' Escort over it and then later when it was used as a stage in Le Tour de France.
Anyway it was on my 'to do' list. Today myself and my mate included it in a route on or motorcycles. Travelling north to south.
What soon became apparent was that it was also on several groups of 'Boy Racers' to do lists. Both young and old.
The issue was that packs of cars where either coming wide or cutting corners (in other words going 2FF) making it a potentially dangerous place to be.
Bet the locals love all these packs booting it through their countryside. :(

Know it well. Hope you missed the early evening deluge... I was walking over Ingleboro & around Ribblehead. Several years ago I worked in Keld, converting the old YH into what is now Keld Lodge. I was there for a few months over winter...freezing. Drive up early Monday, B & B locally then home Friday PM.
A carpenter friend does occasional work on some upmarket holiday lets in Muker ( stunning views down Swaledale) and I help out. Plenty of snow on the 'Tubs in winter...I once sat and waited for the snowplough back to Hawes, then followed it over. It's a heck of a long diversion back to Settle, takes hours!
Did you realise you passed Simonstone Hall where JC had that spat with a producer on Top Gear....apparently no hot food available after a days filming so he had a tantrum, or so I was told. Should have had a curry delivered from Hawes then.

Statutory collection of cheese from the factory and over the top to Buckden where we were chased by the rain but managed to evade it. Was early afternoon. Forecast showed heavy rain coming in from the west later.
No, didn't realise we had passed that place of great historical significance :)

For cheese next time visit the Courtyard Dairy, the old Falconry Centre on A65 nw of Settle. Think they still run the original place SE with f Settle on A65. Friendly knowledgable folks. Free samples and cafe

>>over the top to Buckden

I love that road from Hawes to Hubberholme. The bubbling nascent Wharfe at Yockenthwaite, a stretch of legs by the bridge and a quiet moment in the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels. Maybe a pint in the George.

As a youth I camped at the back of the George more than once. A nice beery triangular evening walk from there to the White Lion at Cray, the Buck, and back to the George. Most memorable time was on a walk from Hawes to Malham via Hubberholme and Arncliffe. I called at the Falcon relativley recently to find it almost unchanged and in the ownership of the son of the man who had it in the mid 70's.
