B-i-L has an Audi A7. This has a forward facing camera just below the 4 rings logo on the grill.
Lens is now cracked, presumably hit by a stone or suchlike.

Being quoted figures right up to 4 figures to get it replaced - can't just change the lens cover you see....... and you need to dismantle half the front end to get access to it you know......

I'm surprised they would put a camera on the outside of the vehicle. It must be easy enough to fit it to the windscreen out of view behind the mirror.

This is a camera for forward vision when parking so would need to be around the front end

On the G30/G31 its between the grilles, as well as the one behind the screen

You mean the current BMW 5 series????? :)

Does yours have it? How well protected is it?

Doesn't the car have a windscreen for that?

But you can't always see buses through a windscreen.....................................;>)

At least the cameras in the grille protect the aircon condenser from stone damage. :-)

G30/G31, pah, I've got a GK.

The camera will be for surround view - rear and forward cameras plus one in each wing mirror. Allows you to view around the car when manoeuvring.

It's quite clever on the BMW 5 and 7 series - you can look around the car when you're not even near it using the phone app.

Surely its not fit for purpose if it can't cope with a stone of up to say 70 MPH (or even faster on an Autobahn).

Well thats every windscreen declared not fit for purpose then.

I did find one thread where someone was trying to claim on their glass cover of their insurance for the camera !

When a stone went through my aircon condenser on the Touran with a 700 quid bill, it was claimed on insurance.

But you only pay £50 insurance if it's damaged.

A lot of policies now have an excess of £75, if not more.

They're generally not 9 inches from the road.

they still can't cope with a stone at 70 mph tho. I bet more screens are chipped or cracked than cameras.

There ought to be protective covers for the camera, like you can get for 'phone screens. I covered the front fogs on a Jazz we had with Lamin-x to protect them.

A polycarbonate cover would do the job, you don't see many stone damaged polycarbonate headlights. But then the manufacturer would not be able to profit from replacement cameras and the labour charge to fit and calibrate it.

Car bras were fashionable a few years back for front protection, esp in the US

but then it'd need a hole for the camera to see through.....
