Mercedes Benz - Car dealer service vs Truck dealer service - LINGsCARS
My 55 plate Vito van suddenly started making noises from the drivetrain.

I took it to Bell Trucks, my local Merc truck dealer at around 2pm today. A mechanic took it for a quick spin with me "sounds like the propshaft centre bearing". The service girl took all my details, and asked me if I could bring it in at 8am tomorrow, saying that removing the propshaft, getting the centre bearing repaired/replaced and refitting for tomorrow afternoon, usually costs around £200.

Why can't car dealers operate like this? Is it really so hard?

Believe me Ling you're very lucky to find a Merc truck dealer who can.

It's not uncommon to break down in an Actros and find a common part unavailable anywhere in the country, and the servicing is terrible.
They treat a lorry cab as a workhorse and usually manage to grease it, and the steering wheel, along with the chassis and propshaft.

Ling that's the sort of good service I've had from my independent for the last few years with out older cars. Now with one new car and one newish car both under warranty I'm using the main dealer for a while and don't expect anything like that level of service.... which is a bit daft when you think about it.

A friend of mine who carries a lot of big dogs has driven vans for a number of years, (and it gives me the chance to drive vans - which I love)

The very worse service was that when a MB Vito was bought. The service from MB was simply shocking. The best was VW who changed a clutch and DMF for free at 80k miles.
