... but only after legal loophole bids fail.

Nick Freeman tried several strokes on behalf of Chris Tarrant, all of which were rejected by a district judge.

Tarrant then pleads guilty.

The guy should have have had the courage to admit what he'd done in the first place.

No chance, so we are once again treated to the unlovely spectre of someone who is rich wriggling on the hook.

I'd have locked him up for wasting everyone's time and a large amount of public money.

Agreed, but it wouldn't have fitted in the subject box.

Did he not get an offer to phone a friend, go 50/50 or ask the jury?

This is one person I would like to meet in private, to hopefully see that he is nothing like his public persona. Years ago he did a morning show on Capital Radio (London) and used to do a very funny sketch - Fishfriars Hall or some such - about a public boarding school.

But I'm sure I would be disappointed.

And then there's the case of footballer Jermain Defoe.

In May: "Mr Defoe, 27, of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, denies using a mobile phone while driving a Range Rover in Loughton, Essex, in October 2009."

But come October, Mr Defoe's recollection of events has improved, and he pleads guilty:
