Whats under your bonnet ? - Ted

Well, under mine is a big iron thing which makes noise, plus all it's associated bits..

There reside some other things......a set of professional jump leads, a gallon of water, a can of easy start, a plastic funnel a spare key and immobiliser thingy, wrapped in a latex glove and well hidden. There's also a 12 volt air pump.
A couple of rags and a pair of chrome-cotton gloves complete the kit.
The jack and brace are under the passenger seat and the wheel is on the back door.
Well, it saves cluttering up the already messy interior !

A Nissan Patrol I once had had so much room under there that I constructed a metal bin on the inner wing to carry leads, water, oil, and various other fluids.

Mines so full of engine that you can't even get your hand down any gaps!

Just a 1.1 54bhp 8v OHC engine and despite the car being so small there is still plenty of room in there.

I haven't looked yet, will check tomorrow and let you know.

Didn't some 1970s Renaults have the spare wheel on top of the engine? Seemed a sensible place to me, since you could be pretty sure of finding it still on top when you needed it. I have a silent dread of a puncture in a fully laden car with the spare under the boot floor.

I think the original Panda had it on the bonnet too.

Mk 4 Ford Zephyrs/Zodiacs of the late 1960s had the spare wheel under the bonnet.
With the weedy V4 engine in the lesser models I think it was a desperate attempt to make it look as if there was something worthwhile under there.

Alas with the handling capablities of a fat duck landing on water, the weight was badly needed in the boot.

Thankfully not a problem the GMC suffers from;

And there's still bags of room under the "hood", that particular lump of cast iron weighs half a ton without the bell-housing!

No, it was under the bonnet, with the jack and wheel-brace, as SWMBO discovered when giving a lift to a more savvy colleague who changed the wheel with the punctured tyre for her.

Scroll down through the many pics and the spare under the bonnet is plainly visible.

Rattle...You'd better not look at this . Your Panda may well be suffering like this one if you're not careful. Suggest an urgent coat of underseal.

Who in the world would want to spend this much time, money and effort on a car this far gone?

Early Renault 5 did, certainly; the housing was a notorious rust trap, which if left untreated destroyed the inner wing.

If you think about it, akin to spraying saline solution onto the bodywork then baking it on, if a wheel is changed on a wet winter's day.

Big plastic cover thing. Oh and the washer bottle filler cap and the dipstick. Not too sure about the rest of it. Looks a bit complicated. Best left alone I suspect.

The jack and wheel brace were bolted to the inner wing.

When I worked for a Renault dealer, we had a few customers who couldn't find either.

Some Renaults of the period had the spare mounted in a cage under the rear of the car.

Can't remember which model had which now.

My Renault 16s in the late 70s had the spare wheel under the bonnet, left loads of room in the boot for the time. I always wondered what the heat would do to it over a long period but since mine was a company car it was never there long enough to perish.

My current 3 series, on the other hand as a 4 cylinder diesel has enough room to get in beside it for maintenance, although as another company car that's not something I shall be trying.

The Citroen CX range had the spare under the bonnet. So did some Dyanes and the Ami range but the 2CV didn't IIRC. My 400cc Dyane had the spare wheel frame retofitted from a larger-engined car.

There isn't much spare space under the C8 bonnet, but if I could get to the space between the radiator and the grill, that would be entirely different.
Whats under your bonnet ? - WillDeBeest
I can help with that one: the 4 (my mum had three in succession) had a cage that was secured by a hook that could be released by loosening a bolt in the boot. I imagine the 6 (which was essentially a 4 styled to resemble a 16) had something similar.

1.4-litre 168bhp engine and just enough room at the front to change headlight bulbs...:-)

1.4 and 168bhp? What have you got a supercharger or something?

The kind of man who'd ship a Panda to America, cross most of the continent, and then ship it back again.

I can't remember know if that was before or after the Africa trip..

Fred Bear has some interesting holidays with Jim.
Whats under your bonnet ? - RattleandSmoke
I never realised that was Jim! He is quite a legend is one of the people that make a Panda cool. Some of the pictures he has taken in the deserts of his 1.1 Panda (identical to mine apart from colour) are amazing.

He has some really interesting blogs on his journeys on the FIAT forum and are well worth a read. They are so good they really should have turned them into a TV programme.

>> 1.4 and 168bhp? What have you got a supercharger or something?

Sounds like the VAG turbo and supercharged 1.4 to me. Supercharged from low revs but then turbo charged when the revs are higher.

Got it in one..:-)

100 per cent torque from 1750rpm to 4,500rpm and then at least 80 per cent to 6,000rpm.

It's the 170PS TSi version and 0-100kph is from around 7.9 seconds to 8.3 seconds depending on VG model.

Quite, quite brilliant and with surprising petrol economy - not far off diesel standards.

The Peugeot 104 and its derivatives also had the spare under the bonnet. Must have added a bit to the crashworthiness. Exception was the XUD engined Visa where the powerplant took up all the space & the spare was in the boot. One of my motoring regrets is ignoring the VisaD offered by my friendly local PSA specialist and instead spending £1k more on a 205 that turned out to have piston ring trouble.

The BX had a large space behind the engine holding only the wash bottles and wiper motor. One guy we met on a holiday on the Western Isles found it just the place to keep the various bits of roadkill etc. he collected as an amateur naturalist.

A wheel ? ! under the Bonnet ?! - The guys in Bavaria would be horrified ! The guys in Leipzig didn't put one in the boot either !

What's under my bonnet?

A straight six work of art that never does anything except ticks quietly to itself year after year, utterly brilliant engine. And a few leaves.

'98 BMW. I've always hankered after a Volvo 850 T5 estate though :-)

Great engines them, a customer has one, he has personaly done 200,000 miles in it, it is a V reg Volvo V90 and it just refuses to die.
Whats under your bonnet ? - nice but dim
I thought the V90 and older 960 had 3.0 I6 or PRV engines only?
Whats under your bonnet ? - RattleandSmoke
He told me it was a 5 cylinder inline. It may be a V80 but its very large and has the thins at the back.

either way you dont hear a rough running even on early 90's car they always seem to sould smooth
Whats under your bonnet ? - RattleandSmoke
His does actually have a mis fire in one of the cylinders but its only slight. Compression is down quite a bit but he has done 40k in like that and it keeps going so he sees reason to have it fixed. He suspects its a failed piston ring on one them.

Volvo 3 series had the wheel under the forward hinging bonnet....but that was only a Renault with a different set of clothes on.

Hillman Imps had the spare under the bonnet.

Fiat X19 had it behind the driver's seat....that took some finding, the first time you wanted to check it.

You mean the boot lid was at the front.
