Cycling and seat belts - Chris S
Anybody else see QI last night? The number of cyclists killed on British roads dramatically increased when seat belts were made compulsory in 1983.

Apparently when people (car drivers) feel safer they take more risks.

That's interesting Chris, I've been pondering this morning on what the effect of having winter tyres fitted does to peoples driving.

Does it bring about that 'I've taken a safety precaution ( the same us I'm not breaking the speed limit) so I'm invincible and safe' effect?

There were similar concerns when ABS became more common place, the '85 Granada was the first mass produced car with it and it was said at the time that it would encourage drivers to brake later.

I've never seen a cyclist wearing seat belts!

Nothing to do with the increased popularity of cycling in the eighties then.

You should have seen the number of cyclists in the 1940s and 1950s. Cars had to give way for cyclists when the factory workers went home in the evening. They used to cycle 3 and 4 abreast.
