 Snow chains - Tooslow
We have an Auto Socks thread so why not a snow chain thread. Should we all go out and buy these? I have no experience of them but no doubt some do. How easy are they to fit? How effective are they?

I'd better check the car handbook, I know you can't fit them to some cars.

They are very effective and get you out of anything short of snow so deep the car can't push through it.
They are easy to fit IF you bother to practice first.
BUT
only for use on ice and snow, so you need to take them off as soon as you are out of it
you can only go slowly - limited to around 30mph (guess not fact)
they don't fit cars with fat tyres in small arches
if you have rear wheel drive you have to choose if you wnat to drive or to steer

I always take them skiiing, even if we go in April, but otherwise I wouldn't bother buying for us in the UK unless you live in a place thtas regularly snowed in.

they damage the tyres if left on for any length of time.

My 98 Mondeo cannt be fitted with chains on the standard Ghia X wheels/ tyres.
I was a little surprised to find that but fortunately no need for them ( yet???) in my part of the country.
