Reflections on Winter - old dog new trick - Vicar of Bray
I`ts been a while since remember a winter like this - perhaps it was around 87 that I drove a 2cv through similar weather. Ice scrapers seemed the latest `in` way of clearing windows then, but I remember scratches on the glass,if you looked closely with the sun on the screen.

You think perhaps there is nothing BASIC really to learn after a few decades - but it was an eye opener to me to learn that no one had a cracked screen following using warm water (other forum thread). I guess (to me anyway) that was as real eye opener, as my previous perspective was that it was a pretty stupid think to do.
I can still be wrong on basics then, after all these years thinking of and working on cars..

I`m using barely warm water now and saving 10 minutes on the drive with the car warming up.
Funny that. Although I guess Drax has to kick in a bit extra to warm the water.

Wonder what else I have missed?

I forgot that when you open your drivers door quickly, the vacuum inside sucks the huge lump of snow off your roof and deposits itself on the drivers seat.

In the recent cold weather I did what I normally do and use warm water. Now it was very cold so two options were:

- Wipers on auto to clear water but risk getting wet
- Wait until you hop in

I tried both and the former was better since the warm/hottish water froze again!

Also with loads of washer fluid in the tank you'd have thought I'd be okay. But in -7oC temperatures with lower due to wind chill the washer nozzles kept freezing. The washer fluid was fine because the rear one still worked.

Ive been cleaning frost off my windscreen that has frozen like concrete these last few months.
I assume the free tins of de icer i find in glove boxes must go off over time.
Plus i wish people would throw away umbrellas that are no good.
Its so infuriating keeping these for a rainy day only to find they are broken as you get them out of the store cupboard.

Trouble with deicer recently was (apart from lowering the temperature of the screen even further) was the wiper blades had frozen a bit. So despite clearing the screen with the deicer the blades could not shift the liquid properly. Warm water....

On my -7o drive I was stopping off to get hot water into plastic bottles at services!

Oh for a Ford Quickclear screen ;-) I forgive all those fine wires honest. Actually they never bothered me one bit. Not saying I drove a Ford mind!

I have a 4x4 with no quickclear but it does have ABS and TC. I have a FWD with quickclear and ABS but no TC and I have a FWD with no ABS and no quickclear and no TC. I have to go to London tomorrow and it's snowing. If I choose the wrong car will I die ? Or should I just take the one which is funded by someone else and hang the risks ?
( should I wear the pink shirt do you think ? )

...should I wear the pink shirt do you think ?...

Only if you want to look like a barrister from the provinces. :)

I can't say I know any provincial legal types. No....none at all. Certainly not on here....dear me no...perish the thought........

I would not risk the pink shirt. The last time I wore a pink shirt I was in a car accident. I cannot be sure the two were or weren't connected somehow.

Would a white shirt be less distracting in snow for other drivers do you think? I always favour the one with black epaulettes, it seems to make other drivers like me more.

In my younger years, before the global climate taxes, I had a white car which had a ski rack fitted. Many people would slow down as I caught up with them. Can't think why. :-)
