 Protecting metal. - Bigtee
Putting this in motoring as it may apply to a car etc mods.

Aeroplanes like the gorgeous P-51 Mustang many are rubbed back to bare metal highly polished and then flown with there gleaming new apperance!!

However what is done to the metal to protect it from the weather elements to stop it corroding?

These types are generally flown in hotter climates or parked in hangers, But paint over metal will offer some protection for a good number of years.

Is some type of Lacqeur sprayed on over the metal or not?

Yes. The "metal" is an aluminium alloy.

London Transport once ran a Routemaster for a year or so without the usual red paint to see how the alloy panels stood up to it.
I don't think they even lacquered the panels, just bare aluminium alloy.

Rolling stock on the central line of the tube was similarly bare aluminium at one time I remember.

I recall some of the seats were 'upholstered' with what looked like compressed sheets of paper.
