A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.... - Runfer D'Hills
An elastic band that's all it took. Didn't even have to pay for it either. One of those red ones postpeople ( heh heh ) drop on your drive..

For weeks now I've had a rattling sound coming from the rear of the Qashqai. Couldn't trace it. Read up on the subject and suspected rear suspension problems ( apparently they're prone to that ) Called Nissan dealer who denied all knowledge of such things but offered to have it in for investigation.

Decided to be clever though before booking it in for remedial work and had a crawl under to check the exhaust mountings. Omitted to change out of white shirt. Had argument. Nope, no visible problems there though. Rattling intermittent so couldn't work up the energy to get it seen to. Convinced myself it could wait until service time. Other days driven to distraction by it. Removed parcel shelf, might be that...nope. Back seats moving?...nope. Must get it booked in...Sat in boot bouncing up and down, couldn't replicate it. Sat in boot while wife drives car round rough surfaced Forestry Commission car park. ( Should've finished coffee before letting her do that ) No rattle...Get back in driver's seat, wipe coffee off shirt, have another argument, drive home, rattle starts up again...

Yesterday, had brainwave...wrapped elastic band around the jack in the boot.

Silence...bliss...

Wouldn't have been an issue in a saloon :-)

should have checked out the HJ website

Good: Excellent urban warrior of a car. On 15" or 16" wheels shrugs off speed cushions and potholes. Very comfortable.
Bad: Doesn't handle like a Focus. Crashy over potholes and speed humps on 17" or 18" wheels. 2.0 diesel particulate filter problems. The jack rattles if you don't put an elastic band on it.

Must remember to keep eyes open for backup band re wife's car in case of future need but her's has the 16" wheels so may be less prone to "jack rattle syndrome".

I had a similar issue with my Panda. Started ratteling after going over what looked like a tiny bump a bit too fast (about 15mph). I had given my mate a lift the night before and he is Mr Vain (the Human League song was written for him). About a week of this annoying rattle it hit me, he used the sun visor for the mirror.

It is on two clips so it can turn round and act as a visor on the door window. Because it was no longer secured it was flapping up and down over bumps and hitting the roof.

I had a Mk2 Nissan Prairie which whistled from somewhere around the front bumper area.
But, it only did it when moving. The dog always knew when SWM was nearly home from work !

I got considerable naggage over the sound, but what could I do ? Never did figure it out. I suggested tie-wrapping SWM's ankles to the wipers and giving it a trip round the block with her head by the bumper.
She didn't go for that.....probably worried in case it rained ! Sold it with it's whistle.

I've wrapped the Escort's jack and wheelbrace in an old towel. It damps rattling noise and also provides something other than my trousers to wipe my hands on (and the flat tyre, if it's wet) after I've used it.

Bedford CAs - that sure brings back memories. The bumper ' rattle' . No seat belts , driving with doors open round europe, just make sure that door is latched back in case you are doing hand signals!
