After years of free cover on new cars, I now have to arrange my own. Who are the recommended suppliers please? I don't need foreign cover or hire cars. AA were good back in the day and GEM used to be a favourite on websites like this one.

Has not the supplier of your free breakdown cover offered you renewal at favourable terms? They usually do

...They usually do...

That's what happened to me for year two cover on the CC3.

I'm expecting an attempt to take me to the cleaners at the next renewal.

Skoda gave me 3 years RAC cover when I bought the car. When that expired I was offered various options I took a further two years European cover for £144 in total payable annually, which I thought quite reasonable.

Ford include only one year with the AA, which I think is a bit mean.

Three years' warranty and three years' breakdown is a much neater package.

I get breakdown cover with my Zurich car insurance - it can be expanded as required for additional payments to suit personal circumstances. The insurance premium is similar to quotes from other insurers.

It also seems to be much in line with the VW breakdown cover on the Jetta, acquired a few months ago after the Zurich insurance had been renewed.

Hard to get more than anecdotal evidence from a group like us, but I'd say that any special offer is only as good as the service you get when you need it.

I can recommend the AA because their response has always been prompt and helpful, and their people seem resourceful and free to act on their own initiative to help the customer.

Tried Green Flag once, in 1998 - it was my company's fleet supplier. Couldn't recommend it based on that experience.

Not sure if it's the case now, but Green Flag (originally based in Bradford but later in Leeds in the 1990s) used to use local recovery specialists and didn't have their own fleet of vehicles.

On the rare occasion I had to use them the response was always rapid and efficient.

I just signed up with Green flag but accessed them through the cashback website www.quidco.com
The cost of the recovery service for a year is £37.10 but I get £20 cashback, although this could take up to 6 months to come back to me.
At £17.10 this is the cheapest deal I could find but I cannot comment on the level of service of any of the companies as I have never had to use them for any years.

The twice i've used them over the past 25 or so years has been for the recovery of our accident damaged vehicles, one from about 250 miles and one from 75 miles.
In both cases they were prompt, friendly and efficient.

My daughter was with them, but now changed allegiance (can't tell 'em), she called them and again they were excellent and found a handy little garage near where she lived at the time (and dropped her home 10 miles away late at night, proper geezer) who fixed her car for pocket money (broken exhaust), so all thumbs up here.

Not the cheapest but locally based to me and i'd rather support a local British owned company with my money, i use Autohome (Norhampton) ...the car not the driver is covered unless you go for the very top package, i go mid range (UK plus) which gives long distance full recovery back to my choice of repairer or onwards to destination, but i don't have home start.

Toyota club has got a very good AA membership offer going at the moment - I have just saved £140 on AA renewal.

Many thanks for leads. RAC gave me a quote over the phone of £62.50, but £99 online. I would expect this to be the other way round.

Been with the RAC for years. The guys on the phone appear to have the power to alter the price to almost any level for any reason so I'm not surprised.

I had a year's AA cover on my new car and I got a VERY keen deal on the price to continue it at my own expense; everything except Continental cover for £55 instead of something the wrong side of £100. That said I was a bit miffed to find they wouldn't turn out to pull me out of a ditch (black ice). Not a breakdown! I wonder if, when the beast was out of the ditch but undriveable they would have turned out? As others have said, the cover may sound good, don't read Paraa 33 (b), and what counts is the service you get when you need it. I paid £265 + VAT for 10 minutes work to hoist me out and waited 4 hours for the service, not from the AA!

Ouch.

Could you/did you claim the money back from insurance as it was part of an accident?
