I have just had an interesting conversation with DVLA. Expired points can be removed by submitting a form, the licence and a fee of £20. However, they are removed free when/if a licence is renewed or if there is a change of address. I think I feel a short "move" to my daughter's address and back!

Still have the points I acquired back in 1985 on my licence.
Not paying to have them removed. They're no longer valid. Anyone that's ever requested to see the licence knows that.
|
Yes I know the British Police would work that out but I have had some doubts about the reaction at a foreign car hire desk!
|
Well my most recent points are 1999 and I'm darned if I'm going to be dragged into the photo licence / pay us every 10 years scheme just to see them gone.

I have 3 points from 2000, on my old green/pink licence, to get them removed would entail getting one of those new fangled ID card licences, renewable every 10 years, no thanks.
|
I like a clean licence. However having had to convert to a photo licence a few years ago and then moving again the points I had were automatically removed.
When I go overseas, no-one asks for the paper part at the car rental counter. They do not know it exists. Only in the UK have I been asked for it.

Never had a problem with points removal - never had any in 47 years, SWMBO likewise but only 42 years.
I have 2 speed camera detectors - one electronic and the one born in 1945 and has proved infallible.

"I have had some doubts about the reaction at a foreign car hire desk!"
I have some points from 1998 on my licence. I have hired cars in many foreign countries on many occasions since then, and have never had a problem.

Was in court for speeding 10+ years ago. Licence had expired points on it. When the clerk read out "the defendant has a clean licence" I felt she gave me a "knowing glance".
|
Just cross them out with a pen, that's all they did for me.
|
Really? No signature or rubber stamp. For £20 I'd expect a reprinted licence and points removed so there would be no doubt!
|
"Just cross them out with a pen, that's all they did for me. ". Me too.
Probably used a special, legal biro.

Difficult for me to understand the 'I'm not paying to have points removed from my licence' attitude. I was banned for 6 months over 20 years due to totting up and when I got my licence back the disqualification was there for any PC with a lot of time on his hands to see. Shortly afterwards I moved house and, when enquiring at Swansea how to go about registering the change of address, I was very politely advised by a lady with a beautiful lilting South Wales accent that a new licence would be produced that would have no reference whatsoever to any previous misdemeanours and, furthermore, all such misdemeanours would thenceforth be removed from my record at Swansea thus giving me a completely 'clean' driving licence. That's got to be worth £20 of anybody's money in my book.
By the way, it didn't cost me anything because of the bona fide change of address.
|
Ah well, people are different. "It takes all sorts" as they say. Not worth a penny to me. So someone might see I was done in 1999. So what? I'll take that £20 out of my pocket and put it in the other one. Not to mention the fee every 10 years.

If you are stopped you obviously think that there is no difference between a clean license and one that indicates that you have at least one previous offence logged.
A human will of course totally ignore what is past.
The first time I was stopped and greeted with " Did you not see me behind you? " I knew that whatever I said would still get me three points.
My thoughts were " Did SWMBO burn your toast this morning clever clogs ? "
I certainly got a clean license ASAP afterwards. I do not want extra aggro when hiring a vehicle.
|
That was my thought HK. The points are on your licence and have no expiry date stated. I wouldn't expect an Avis employee at Belgrade airport, or wherever, to know that if they were given more than 4 years ago they are not relevant.
|
No-one's ever looked at the bit with the (vacant at the moment - touch wood) spaces on them for the points in a foreign transaction....don't think they give a stuff really.
|
Someone said it further up the thread, the rental agents abroad don't even know the paper part of the license exists. I didnt even bother to get it out in San Francisco.
I shant bother in Palermo in September either, they wont ask for it.
I am hoping for a Fiat 500 twin air to zip around the Island in
