Ford Fiesta - WTF is that green cog? - Ian (Cape Town)
Been driving a Fiasco this week.
The centre radio/info display has a green cog light next to it - below the email and phone stuff.
WHAT is it for, FFS? NOTHING in the manual.

At one stage I thought it was a 'gearbox broken' light*. But there's already one of those in the odo/speedo console.

So what IS that poxy green cog for?

* - yeah, the auto gearbox was/is RUBBISH. changes out of first at 3500rpm??? and is shunty in traffic, never in the right gear.
I honestly thought it was a fault. Until net research says they ALL do that. My 220000km Opel's box is better.

It's the "settings" mode.

The stereo cycles through CD - radio - Aux - Settings, apparently.

Just missed the edit. Mid-90s Mondeo autos had a cog telltale for "sport" mode, but that was in the main instrument binnacle.

Thanks guys.
Have now determined - and again, thanks - that it is a radio setting.
Brilliant - have radio settings which resemble warning lights...

You're welcome.

>> radio settings which resemble warning lights

My new car has a "snowflake" light for cold days - it's yellow below 4°C and red below 0°C. I really don't like having a yellow or red light on around the dials in normal running, at a glance to me it means there's a problem under the bonnet. It would make more sense for the snowflake to be white, surely?

The astra has a 'snow' button next to the gearshift.
If it is icy, push button, and it prevents wheelspin.
Great.
I live in ^%$## africa! and the button symbol is identical to the aircon button.

Go figure.

brake warning light should be a lit symbol of the grim reaper in my opinion

In the merc, if there's something going wrong, the whole middle of the speedo glows blood red and you get a message in red and a blood-curdling beeping. Scared the bejesus out of my MiL when it announced the tyre pressures were low on the M3!
