Did anyone else notice that the big Rolls Royce limo that took some of the guests to Westminster Abbey (Queen & Prince Philip I think) had no number plates or tax disc?

Now if you or I were to drive round that part of London at 10mph with no plates or disc, you can be sure that one of the many policemen around today would have pulled us.

Or is the Queen exempt from her own Highway rules?
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - rtj70
Or was it a Bentley? Haven't paid that much attention today - been to the gym and building decking.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - rtj70
They also went the wrong way today down one way streets. They are going to be in trouble.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Slidingpillar
The reigning monarch is exempt number plates! Honest.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - FuzzyDuck
And that Aston Martin clearly had a false number plate on the back.

and I think it still sports a a nice pedestrian friendly mascot on the bonnet just in front of the windscreen.
With his AA badge on the front he should be ok if if it runs out of wine :-)

It was James Bonds car, but the front revolving plate is broken, since Q died no-one knows how to fix it.

>> Or is the Queen exempt from her own Highway rules?

Yes she is. The royal car does not have road tax or need plates. Its the Queens Highway, she can do as she likes. Doesn't need a driving license either. (she has one tho I understand, got it driving lorries in the army)
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Boxsterboy
Even when she's not doing the driving?
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Zero
I dont think her driver needs one either, certainly no insurance. (its bonded)

Wasn't there a police motorbike in front.

You can legally drive anywhere if directed by a uniformed policeman.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Ted

If I recall my college lectures, I think the Queen is exempt from all laws, not just motoring.

She could commit the most awful of crimes and get away with it. Throw stones at a neighbour's house.....drop empty lager cans up the Mall.....no Asbos for Lizzie.

I think it had to do with the fact that prosecutions are brought in the Queens name.......
BBD versus Regina....that sort of thing. She couldn't prosecute herself.

If I can wean this thread off what looks like a design competition for prison uniform, wasn't the RR that Charles and Camilla arrived in absolutely glorious! I think it was made specially for the present Queen's wedding in 1947.

It seemed to have a spare wheel on the front wing, which I'd thought was the mark of a pre-war Rolls.

The Aston Martin, EBY 776J, is Charles's own which he's had since new.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - rtj70
>> The Aston Martin, EBY 776J, is Charles's own which he's had since new.

I think Charles is an AM enthusiast. He has liked AM for decades.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Bellboy
only google has the answer
<<<<<<<<<<<<
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Prince Charles received his Aston Martin from the Queen as a 21st birthday present and in 2008, as part of cutting his carbon footprint campaign; the prince converted the classic car to run 100 percent bio ethanol fuel distilled from surplus British wine. The Prince’s aides said at the time that although he only travelled two or three hundred miles a year in the Aston, he wanted it to be environmentally friendly. The car, which is kept at Highgrove averages ten miles a gallon, the equivalent of 4.5 bottles of wine for every mile. The bio ethanol is slightly cheaper than conventional petrol and it is estimated to produce 85 percent less carbon dioxide.

Why do you and Rattle end so many of your sentences with "though"? Is it like a Manchester like thing, like?

(search the site under your name for the keyword "though").

Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Ted

I don't think it's a Manchester thing, though

It's possibly lack of imagination by both of them, though.

More annoyingly, why do so many posters, here and other places, use the word ' loose ' when they mean ' lose ' ?

Though.

Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Manatee
I don't think it's uncommon usage - by which I mean I do it. I'm from the county of the white rose though.

"A good cause would do well, though."

Thomas Dryden.

I agree about loose and loosing for lose and losing. How can anybody attain majority without noticing the right spelling?

We should all agree that it's rude to point out poor grammar and spelling in forum posts, but I stumble every time I see that one - probably because it's not just mispelt, it has another meaning that rarely fits the context.

...because it's not just mispelt...

Misspelling misspelt is unfortunate in this context.

Using 'mis-spelt' is an acceptable alternative and is clearer.

Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Manatee
I wondered who'd bite on that one...

It looks better, to me, than misspelt, and it's such a common misspelling that I do believe it might take over.

You're right though.

Or in a police car with its lights flashing, displaying a STOP sign, and the driver indicating that he wants you to stop?
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Armel Coussine
>> Bentley

It wasn't that one BobbyG. It was a Rolls-Royce. I think they have two or three like that, with the perspex back end to the roof.

The car the princes went to church in was a Bentley. Perhaps a VW one as it looked quite new. And the monarch has at least one of these huge BMW RR bricks, because I've seen her in it.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - rtj70
AC

This is why I could be confused as I saw the Bentley emblem. I also was doing the new decking.

So HRH maybe went in an older RR and the younger grandchildren in a Bentley. Looked similar though.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Armel Coussine
Another thing: I thought everyone knew the monarch didn't need a number plate on an official or state car. After all one would have thought the prominent coat of arms above the windscreen, discreet second vehicle full of heavies and six motorbike outriders would do for identification purposes, in case they all exceeded the speed limit, ploughed through a bus stop crowded with schoolchildren or tried a bit of drive-by grease gun action outside the republican party HQ...

The Rover 3 litre she used to drive herself around in had a normal number plate.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - AnotherJohnH
Further to the business of number plates:

Not that I was watching all that diligently.. but I think there were three different Royal Rolls/Bentley or whatever without plates in use yesterday morning.

HM was only in one of them.

Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Iffy
One of the Bentleys had a number plate: VVW 1, I think.

Does VW own Bentley?

If so, I wondered if it was on loan.

Prince Charles was riding in a 1950s Phantom.

That's an old car, meticulously maintained or not.

Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - smokie
Some years back Bentley ran a team at Le Mans for a couple of years. The pit crew and technicians were almost all from Audi (VAG).

And the answer is Yes - see Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Group

It was nice to see the Old Man's Aston out again (I saw a pic in the DT). I recall reading in one of Alan Clark's books how he poked fun at HRH when he saw him stranded one night on the Hammersmith flyover with an electrical problem. Not unknown with Astons.
At least Clark was honest - some time after that his Bentley Continental S gave electrical trouble as well, but he owned up to it.

The colour is apparantly specially prepared for the Queen.

I queried why no-one was wearing seat-belts, but turns out there's a specific exclusion in the law for events organised by, or for, the Royal family.
Rolls Royce - Royal Wedding Car - Iffy
...I queried why no-one was wearing seat-belts...

Ms Middleton was sitting upright, not using the backrest.

A lap and diagonal belt wouldn't do a lot for the wedding gown.

How do other brides manage?

>> How do other brides manage?

1. They are not being watched by 2 billion people.
2. They are not beign driven by a Prince/Duke with a police protection squad behind them.
3. They are not driving on a road closed off for their wedding.
4. They are not driving from Grandmama's Palace to one's own little abode down "The Mall" which is part of Grandmama's estate.

Are those enough reasons for you?

BTW - I was not aware that the traffic lights and bollards in middle along The Mall were easily removable. They were all there on Thursday night at 10pm but were absent on Friday.

Indeed they are, just like some Swiss motorways have removable street furniture to make emergency military runways. The main road approach to Singapore airport has removable Palm trees to make an emergency runway.

I typeset a book earlier this year called Flying Boats of the Empire (The Rise and Fall of the Ships of the Sky - Richard Knott. (Hale Books). Not sure if it's been published yet. It's a fascinating read but the crash rate is shocking.

Of the Empire Flying Boat Fleet (43)

Scrapped - 16
Crashed - 18
Destroyed by enemy action - 6
And the rest destroyed by fire/gale/accidents on the ground.

You wouldn't get me in one.

No, what I meant was how do other brides deal with the seatbelt law?

A passenger in the back of a taxi is obliged to wear a belt.

Brides cannot be excused just because they are wearing a big, flouncy dress.

But I bet most brides don't wear a belt for their ride to and from church.

maybe the brides could claim pregnancy for the non fitting of seat belts and say they they are off to a shotgun wedding
the shotguns are in the car behind..........

AFAIK, most if not all UK traffic management is courtesy of Siemens, and their current generation of stuff "plugs into" fixtures in the ground.

Probably.
