I twice had the pleasure of being in the front passenger seat with Stirling Moss at the wheel in the 1990s.

Brilliant driver as we all know and always friendly and charming.

Nice interview with the great man on Today (BBC R4) this morning.

He told how, completely out of the blue, mid race, he'd become scared of driving at the pace required in order to be competitive. He said the feeling came on very suddenly, and had never happened before. He said he'd frightened himself on many occasions throughout his career with near misses and other incidents, but this was the first time he'd ever felt scared of simply driving flat out.

He pulled off into the pits on the next lap, got out of the car, and announced he wasn't racing competitively any more. He did say that he'd still be doing demonstration drives and events, just no more competitive stuff.

The man is a legend.
