 Company car advice. - BobbyG
My brother has just been promoted and will be getting a company car. He will be doing many miles, covering an area from Central belt of Scotland all the way to Carlisle. He has no previous knowledge of company cars and neither do I really.

He is looking for a comfy mile eater but as economical as possible. I believe that he pays for the fuel and charges business miles at 15p per mile. He has grown up kids who live away from home so no need for extra seats, child seat issues etc and he will not be carrying much for his work other than case and laptop so no need for lots of luggage space.

The list of possible cars is noted below. There obviously looks to be some missing info but based on what we have so far, what are the thoughts of most economical and cheapest to run car ( I am thinking Golf Bluemotion).

What other factors should he be taking into account?

>>I believe that he pays for the fuel and charges business miles at 15p per mile.

Are you sure that's right, Bobby? I was charging more than that 30 years ago.
 Company car advice. - Iffy
I wouldn't fancy a lot of miles in a Golf/Auris sized car, so it would be the Passat for me.
 Company car advice. - BobbyG
I queried this with him as I, also, used to charge my company 35p a mile for business use. However that was because I owned my car whereas this will be a company car so really only looking to cover the cost of the fuel as opposed to wear and tear etc?

At 15p a mile, and diesel about 135 a litre, I reckon he is looking to get a car with minimum 41 miles a gallon?
 Company car advice. - Zero
He is being reimbursed for Fuel only, not the cost of running the car. The company provides and runs the car. They should vary that amount as the price of fuel changes.

The most important factor is BiK. you also need to be aware that the BiK, when added to your salary could push you into 40% tax bracket. So that need to be checked.

The most important cost out of your pocket is BIK. And the CO2 Threshold goes down yearly, so your 0 Bik this year may be money next year. There is also a diesel escalator that makes the BiK higher on those.

Audi A3 1.6 TDI SE 105t 5DR Sportback

The info as you may have guessed, has been taken straight from fleet website.

Agree some of the figures don't add up - is the Golf Bluemotion really £0 BIK or just not been completed properly? The Bluemotion Tech seems to add stop/start technology but as a result of that improved mpg, BIK jumps to £2585 and higher CO2?

Also no mention of spare wheel on the VW website, I assume this helps with keeping weight down but don't know if I would fancy getting a puncture on the M74 in the middle of winter with, presumably, a can of gunk? Also runs on 15" alloys, the Passat runs on steels and wheel trims.

The Golf's 0 bhp would worry me more.

None of the cars will be £0 for BIK. Take the BMW 116D which actually has emissions of 118g/km but that doesn't matter. This would be taxed at 13% for the 2011/2012 tax year for BIK but will jump to 17% next tax year.

So for a 20% rate tax payer, BIK would be £500 and therefore £1000 for a 40% rate tax payer. Note I have taken the list price of the BMW 116d ES to be £19240.

Pretty sure that BiK is wrong too. A 99g car should be 13% now (10%+3% for diesel) and next year, rising to 14% in 2013-14. Add 1% for every additional or partial 5g above 99g.
 Company car advice. - rtj70
Looking at the BIK figures, you pay tax on those rates (if they are right... the £0 ones are not).

Look at the Golf BlueMotion:

Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI 105 Bluemotion Tech S 5DR Estate
Advisory P11D: £19790 | BIK: £2633| Co2: 109 g/km | 105 bhp

This is taxed at 13% this year and 15% next year. Therefore BIK this year is actually:

19790 * 0.13 = 2572.70 (so the figure again is wrong).

Actual tax for 20% payer therefore is £514.54pa or for 40% payer £1029.08pa.

I have the 316D ES which is 109g/km.

Advisory P11D is about £27k but I find it a good all round car and soaks up the miles.

I get about 63mpg when driving like a saint, 58 when driving normally and about 50mpg when pushing it.

It is no slouch either and is happy to cruise in 6th gear, but you will need to change down on some long hills.

>> I have the 316D ES which is 109g/km. Advisory P11D is about £27k

Why is it the 316D has lower emissions than the 116D?

Just did a quote with my lease company on the 116D ES. If I went for one, I'd get back £126pm because it's that much below my allowance. Still pay tax on the BIK of course.

Passat for me for the potential better comfort over the Golf. If he goes for the Seat or BMW, factor in some chiropractor sessions.

Sorry, fingers typing, brain not in gear, it is 118g/km but the tax remains at 13% this year!

There is an efficient dynamics 3 series though with a 2.0d and emissions of 109g/km.

I'd do a quote but the 3 series has vanished off the lease company site. Isn't there a new one due soon?
