What haven't you driven?? - Dave_
In another thread I mentioned that I'd spent today driving a Ford Transit of 2002 vintage. Strangely, especially for someone in my line of work, I'd never driven a 21st-century shape Ford Transit until today - everywhere I've worked for the last 11+ years seems to have only had Sprinters or Fiat/Citroen/Peugeot vans.

Thinking it over, I realised I've also never even sat in a Ford Focus - one of the most popular cars in the UK since 1998.

What recent cars have completely passed you by?

I don't think I've driven a new Transit, several of its competitors. And I've never sat in a Focus. Or a Porch. I haven't been a Jaguar newer than an XJS.

Never been in a Nissan. Never been in a Rover.

Not been in a Fiat since I was tiny.

Pretty much everything that's not my own line of PSA cars since 1989 has passed me by. Not driven a big hire van for years either. Daughter moving out of halls next year might give me an opportunity to do that again. Renault Trafics were great fun, much more so than a saggy rwd Transit.

This will be a very long list.... I have not driven Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley, Maybach, McLaren etc.

If I confine this among realistic cars only then I have not driven any Audi, BMW, Peugeot, Citroen, Saab, Subaru etc.

>> This will be a very long list

I should have asked, in my original post, about mainstream cars I guess. :)

Today's Transit was a pool vehicle, 52 plate with 199,700 miles up. Tight as a drum, smooth, quiet and a much comfier seat than a Sprinter too - a real revelation!

Not driven but would like to:

Tractor with caterpillar tracks

Vintage Rolls Royce

Vintage lorry

Jensen CV8

Jaguar XK 120

Nothing made in the last 20 years.

Only sat in a Focus once, at a motor show round about the time hey were being first introduced, and then only in the back. I can still recall that my overriding impression was of a dark claustrophobic rear passenger seat, and that I wouldn't want to inflict it on a passenger. Just a first impression, perhaps caused by the car being inside rather than in the open air.

Like others, most of my driving over recent years has been in a single make, Saab. Didn't like the Sharan we borrowed recently, too bus like for me. Can't imagine it would be comfortable on a long journey. Haven't tried most of the mainstream cars, nor BMWs (had a 5 series for a weekend a few years back as an extended test drive), Audis (passenger once), Mercs (once again had an extended test drive in an E220CDi some 12 years ago).

I haven't driven an LRV* lately.

*Luner Roving Vehicle.
What haven't you driven?? - mikeyb
Current Mondeo

Any Subaru

New Fiesta

Not driven a transit for years - probably over 10

Not driven a BMW since 1996
What haven't you driven?? - Iffy
I've not driven a large, modern 4X4.

What haven't you driven?? - RattleandSmoke
In my case it is what I have driven:-

4 X Corsa B's
2 X Renault Clio MK2s
1 X Clio MK3 (passed my test in this car)
6 X Fiestas
1 X Ford Escort
2 x Fiat Pandas
1 x Fiat Punto mk1
1 x Ford Focus 1.6 MK1
1 x Volvo FH (in a yard_
1 x Scannia something (in a yard)
1 x Peugeot 206 GTI

So car wise not driven anything bigger than a Focus!

Funny what a limited range the cars I have driven are.
 What haven't you driven?? - nyx2k
i lay claim to have driven many very expensive cars like Royce or Maybach and lots of old 80's cars that a friend collects but also lots of modern cars but oddly never even been in any VW or Fiat.

>> Funny what a limited range the cars I have driven are

Actually, considering your low annual mileage Rats, it's noteworthy just how many different cars you have driven. Certainly by the time I was on my fourth car I hadn't driven that many others.

>> Jaguar XK120

I had the privilege of having a good nose around the inside of NUB120 at Goodwood a few years ago, that's as close as I've got :)

>> Sharan, too bus like for me

I used to use the boss's then-new P-reg Sharan for 7-seat jobs at the cab firm. My first impression of it was just how un-bus like it was to drive!

>> large, modern 4x4

I was lent an 03 Range Rover Vogue last winter to drive 15 miles home and back in 6" of fresh snow. What an incredibly sure-footed drive, it opened my eyes as to exactly why the drivers of these, BMW X5s etc sit so close behind you in inclement weather... The 4wd hardware and electronics simply cancelled out all the effects of the snow and ice, to all intents and purposes it felt like driving a normal car on a dry tarmac road.

>> oddly never even been in any VW or Fiat

That's the thing, you wonder how such ubiquitous marques can have passed you by!

Damnit I drove a Galaxy 2.3 auto as well - that was quite a car !
What haven't you driven?? - DP
Anything in Vauxhall's current lineup.
Anything Mercedes built in the last 20 years.
A BMW MINI
A Hyundai, Lexus, Seat or Suzuki.

I have never so much as sat in a Hyundai or a Suzuki. With further thought, I MIGHT have driven an original (pre VAG) Seat Ibiza back in my car sales days, but I can't be sure. It clearly wasn't memorable if I did.

What haven't you driven?? - Manatee
Never driven a Ferrari or any 'supercar', a Porsche, a Morgan, an Aston Martin, or a Royce as one should call them - though I have driven the Bentley Continental coupe, similar to a Corniche.

If I could choose to rectify one omission it would be to drive a proper C type, but as I don't know anyone who has one that's unlikely to happen.

Amongst current and recent common marques, I have never driven a Lexus, a Smart or a Seat, a Hyundai, Kia, Ssangyong or the unlamented Daewoo - nothing Korean in fact that I was aware of, or a MINI (though I've had a few Minis).

What haven't you driven?? - WillDeBeest
Nothing by Mercedes or Jaguar, ever. Not on principle, it just never happened. Nothing big and French either, much as have liked the idea of a Vel Satis or a C6.

Only one BMW, a colleague's company 320d in about 2005. Liked the seats and driving environment, but it felt slow and the thin tyres made it horribly jittery.

No Vauxhalls since I offloaded my bad-buy Astra in 1996. No Peugeots since I failed to buy a 306 in 1993 and their footwells shrank to the point of impossibility. Nothing Korean.

Nothing 4wd, except a brief go in another colleague's late-90s Freelander, on a dry day when there was no water for it to let in.

Nothing by Alfa Romeo or, sadly, Lancia. I fancied a Dedra for a while - especially liked the plaid upholstery - but never managed to try one.
What haven't you driven?? - legacylad
Conversely, I cannot think of any current mainstream cars I would want to drive, except maybe an XF to see what all the fuss is about.
Recently I had a long drive with a friend in his new 530D, N to S across France. That was one car I could happily live with every day, albeit in petrol guise with my low mileage. Anything more exotic and I would worry about where I left it.
What haven't you driven?? - Ted

Up to the mid-nineties I guess I've driven most makes of car including some long forgotten.
Being involved in transport and delivery of vintage and classics made this inevitable.

Long distance runs have been made in Porsche 911/928, AM Vantage, Lagonda Wedge, Jag saloons and E Type V12, Merc 500 stretch, Chevy V8 Harem van, Many big 80s yanks, Range Rovers ( We used them ), Rolls Shadow, Dawn, Cloud, 20/25, 20hp. Ferraris, I'd have to get my photo album out to remember more.

Plenty of ordinary stuff, hundreds of Ladas, Polskis, Zastavas. I even drove a fork lift once...just to load it but it was like carrying a block of lead of the same size !

Happy daze.

Ted
What haven't you driven?? - PhilW
Guess I'm something of the opposite of Ted. Up until 3 years ago when I "retired" I had driven mainly "ordinary family" cars though mainly with a bias towards Renault and Citroen. Then, on retirement, my wife found me a "little" job as a plater. I suppose I average 2 or 3 different cars per day. I've not had a Lambo or a Rolls Royce yet but have had Ferraris (430 and 430 Scuderia), Maserati (Quattroporte and GT Cambiocorsos), Astons (Vantages and DB9s), loads of Porsches of all varieties, several Jag XFR, XJ and XKR, Bentley GTs in various guises and the Mulsanne etc. Not had an Audi R8 yet but all other Audis, BMWs (new 5 and 7 series are cracking!) and MBs. Had a Mini Cooper S John Cooper thing the other day. But that was followed by an right old wreck of a Freelander that didn't have a damage free panel. Very few Alfa or Fiats but most other cars I think.
This week so far - brand new 7 series, 320d, 330d, X1, Berlingo van, Disco, Prius and Hilux and a 56 plate Picasso and 02 plate Shogun (in "nearly new " condition, and it was!) and a Peugeot campervan. Oh, and a very nice XKR Convertible (on a sunny afternoon!). Variety is the spice of life!

Wow Phil. Which was your favorite?
What haven't you driven?? - PhilW
"Which was your favorite?"

Most of them !! Mainly because I can't afford most of them! And most are quality cars.
I have a real soft spot for the Quattroporte though - partly because when I was a callow youth I read about the "birdcage" Maserati and had Dinky Toys of the Maser 158 which was all conquering in the early '50s but mainly because it was very comfortable (unlike the Astons!!) roomy and fast! Astons do make a glorious noise though and go like stink.
Large family car Jag XF or XJ? Although 5 or 7 series would be very tempting!
Large family car, money no object? Bentley Mulsanne?
Weekend fun car - Porsche 997 4s cab. Though the John Cooper Mini was fun!
4x4 for winter? Disco 4 or X5 (with sensible tyres!!) Freelander 2 is good also. Cayenne too big X6 horrible - good drive but daft design. X1 seems good also but only had a couple.
So - wouldn't mind any of them really! I also like Lexus, maybe a CT for SWMBO?? Maybe not, she loves her Citroen Cross dresser (or is it a C-Crosser??)

Must try to start my old Zantia this weekend, not used it all summer!!
Phil
What haven't you driven?? - Avant
No Rolls or Bentley or any of the supercars, or a Morgan (though I'd like to), but I've owned, hired or test-driven most things in 45 years. I don't think I've ever driven an Alfa, and I'm quite dry-eyed about it. Kia, yes (Ceed, quite liked it) but not yet a Hyundai.

Cars I've driven but wish I hadn't - Vauxhall Corsa with so-called Easytronic semi-automatic transmission, and an immensely boring 1.4 petrol Astra that I hired to go from Aberdeen via Dumfries to southern England. I'd asked for a diesel and anything but a Vauxhall: what a silly way for a hire company (better not name and shame) to lose a customer.

There are of course: Buicks, Cadillacs,Chevrolets, Chryslers, etc :-)

I drove an 820 Vitesse Sport. I don't know if this was a particularly good one, but it was ace. One of the best turbo installations of its era. Zero lag, loads of grunt, and the chassis wasn't too shabby either. Good fun barge.

I won't drive another 800 on principle, as it's unlikely to be a patch on it, and it's always nice to end on good memories :-)

I'm sure it's been linked to before, but Tony Pond averaged 100mph around the Isle of Man TT course in an 827 Vitesse in 1990:

What an awesome video!
