There are more than 4,000 fixed Gatso speed cameras across this great nation of ours and none so useless as that situated on Rhiwbina Hill in Cardiff.

While across their patch South Wales Police netted more than £700,000 in fines from speeding motorists caught by a total of 89 cameras in 2009, including those from 6,657 drivers caught on their cash machine camera along the M4 near Cardiff, this single camera on Rhiwbina Hill flashed just once.

That's right. Once.

So the £20,000 installation of the camera, branded an unnecessary eyesore by everyone who lives nearby, increased the total revenue of the South Wales Police force by just £60.

That compares to the one on the M4 which catches 18 drivers every day.

Except the revenue goes to the Treasury, local force gets none of it.

Of course you could argue that its doing its job. Its highly visible and slowing down the traffic.

The authorities can't win really. If a camera catches a lot of people its described as a scamera and is claimed simply to be a means of raising money. If it doesn't catch anyone its described as useless.
