can a mod bump this to Motoring please.

If I opine it's the truck driver's fault, I will upset Pat.

If I opine it's the train driver's fault, I will upset bigtee.

So for once, I'm not going to opine anything.

You will upset me if you insist upon this 'court speak'

You can 'suggest in your opinion' it is whoever's fault you like.

My money is on the Truck drivers fault, whatever he says blinded him.

If you can't see the colour of a light you stop, simple really.

What Pat said; the very least you would do would be to proceed with extreme caution which does not look to be the case here. And it's a tram not a train.

...You will upset me if you insist upon this 'court speak'...

Blame that ruddy accountant in the oiling bearings thread.

He started me on opining.

But if Houston's railway crossings are like ours, it's either red light or no light rather than a choice of colours. Even so, Pat's right that you don't cross the line until you know that it's safe. 'Probably won't be hit by a train' isn't quite enough.

I know I said I wasn't going to, but....

Leaving aside the question of fault, it surprises me there are not more tram/road vehicle collisions.

If the Edinburgh trams ever turn a wheel I think there will be carnage for the first few weeks. If Edinburgh Council have anything to do with it they will probably send all local car drivers to Prague for a months training on driving with trams on the road.

Well, it's a tram really rather than a train i.e. it's running along the public highway at low speed, so I'm not sure how many lights there actually are.

..and here's another scarier one from Houston, tram vs. bus:-

What's that man on the floor raising his hand doing? Is he calling the barman to bring over another drink because he can't stagger to his feet, or is he saying, please Sir, are we going to hit that truck?

Having worked in British Rail Engineering many years ago and seen 2" steel plate crumpled like paper on collision damaged locomotives you don't want to risk being hit by one.

Energy of a passenger train, say 500 tonnes at just 100mph is enormous, around 484Mj - at 150mph it is aroung 1000Mj and at 250mph (e.g.TGV) 3000Mj.

A 5000 tonne freight train at 45mph around 1000Mj.

A local train like the one pictured doing just 15mph (pulling into a station) still has around 9Mj of energy.

To put it into perspective in a Euroncap impact a 1.5 tonne car at 40mph has around 1/4 Mj.
