M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Zero
A large-scale clean-up operation is under way after a tanker carrying more than 20 tonnes of yeast extract overturned on the M1.

The lorry, which was believed to be carrying Marmite, crashed and spilt its contents onto the carriageway at about 22:15 GMT on Monday.

Police closed the motorway in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 near Sheffield following the accident.

The Highways Agency said it hoped the road would reopen at about 08:00 GMT.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said the tanker overturned after being involved in a collision with a motor caravan.

Was it spread all over the road?

Maybe the mods can put these two onto one slice?

Apparently they're sending soldiers from the Towcester barracks to help clean up. (merge threads shortly)

Makes a difference to jam.

Was it on the yeast bound carriageway?

No, he was in tune with the breakfast show.

Or motor caravan driver?

Is this causing problems on the (y)east bound carriageway?

marmite is created by throwing salt at yeast , the yeast commits suicide and disembowels itself creating the sticky goo....

Thanks Zoo, if anyone didn't like Marmite before they are not going to change their minds now:-)

I know one of my old chemistry teachers worked in a marmite factory for a bit, and having done so vowed he'd never touch the stuff.

I quite like it though.

Me too - this thread has inspired me to include a pot in my next Asda online order.

Have you tried the Asda equivalent? Not the same but not bad, and about half the price.
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Zero
Vegemite is the way to go,

No, but a quick search for 'yeast extract' on the site shows the Asda one is a fair bit cheaper.

Another choice it brings up is Vegemite, so I guess that's similar.

The amount of Marmite anyone eats makes any saving by going own brand minimal when spread (haha) over a year.

50% off a jar of marmite - not much. 50% off a week's shopping - worth having. 'Look after the pennies, the pounds look after themselves' as I'm sure iffy is told by the locals when he's up in his Yorkshire caravan :)
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Iffy
...50% off a jar of marmite...

The online saving, in pence per 100g, looked nearer 20 per cent.

Still a substantial reduction.

Vegemite is also a lot cheaper than Marmite.

Surprised it's as little as that; thought it was more. Still, haven't bought it for a while - Mrs F writes the shopping list, and marmite is one of the items where she's been adding 'not Asda' recently.

I've just taken delivery of my fourth weekly order.

Seamless so far, all correct and no substitutions.

When I was young my mum used to serve marmite and salad sandwiches for tea on a Sunday sometimes.

As an experiment, I made myself one the other day for the first time in over 40 years - butter, marmite, spring onions, tomato, lettuce.

It was actually really good, although Mrs C wouldn't go near it.

"When I was young my mum used to serve marmite and salad sandwiches for tea on a Sunday sometimes."

Surely every one had fish paste sandwiches, winkles, Victoria sponge and jelly. I know I did.

When my Uncle and Aunt were coming, and it was Very Special, we had canned salmon sandwiches. Very exotic.

Not sure about jelly in a sandwich though.

Yes we had salmon on special occasions. Had to be the red stuff though. Pink wasn't classy.

I enjoy a marmite and tomato sandwich.

Take a slice of bread and toast it on one side. On the other spread with marmite and pile on a good mature cheddar.
Place under grill and enjoy!

Try the cheese on first, then spread the marmite over the top, it bubbles into the cheese then.

I know, dont thank me, some of us are blessed with cooking skills.
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Pat
But how do you spread Marmite on grated cheese?

Dont grate your cheese, thinly sliced is best. Use a mandolin to slice it thinly.

Once you have one of those you can julienne your carrots!
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Pat
Julian can do what he likes with my carrots. Mine come ready sliced and washed from Tesco in a bag which goes in the microwave.

Marmite and tomato has the ring of a good combination about it.

Not so sure about Marmite and cheese, although I've been known to sprinkle Worcester sauce on a rarebit.

is yeast any relation to Slugs?
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Roger.
SWMBO buys good fresh yeast, in nice little foil-wrapped squares, from Morrison's. About 95% of our bread is home baked and fresh yeast is better than the dried sort.
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Pat
Please Roger, don't mention home made bread:)

There is a new "brew" marmite called XO - a bit stronger and matured for longer. Just after WW2 my Mother used to make me a hot drink of Marmite in a mug of hot water - quite tasty if Bovril wasn't around - which it wasn't!
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - rtj70
I had a bread maker and liked the bread etc. Too much effort (and there was little!). Move along. Mine went to the charity shop when we moved.

Unless you make lots of bread all the time... cheaper to buy good bread IMO.

Now what about Vegemite and Cheese? Not available in the UK shops. But available in Oz. And in some online shops.
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Bromptonaut
Vegemite and cheese premixed? Oz cheese as well?
M1 shut after Marmite tanker crash in South Yorks - Harleyman
It wouldn't be carrying Marmite; probably a load of brewers yeast from Tadcaster or suchlike going back to the factory at Burton-on-Trent.

Used to do that job on agency years ago when Wincanton had the contract; absolute doddle.

Not 'alf as much a fun story though !
