Tyres / ice rink demo. - Old Navy
The BBC did a "Cold car" piece this morning. Part of it was summer v winter tyres on an ice rink. It demonstrated that winter tyres had marginally better grip, but nothing an experienced driver could not manage without ABS, TC, ESC etc. What is so important that Joe and Joanna public must drive on sheet ice anyway?

Probably sponsored by the tyre companies, in an attempt to drum up interest in winter tyres, in this the warmest winter since records began.

I knew I should have listed to the woolly mammoths on here and bought a set.

Yeah - right.

Winter is not over yet. Remember 1947.....
Tyres / ice rink demo. - Zero
alas no I dont. nor do you.

Winter tyres must be a marketing triumph in the UK. :-)

Any Eskimos want a fridge?

To Zero. I was there, but unaware due to extreme youth. But the records show the snow fall. Don't be disagreeable and obtuse.

I was not being disagreeable or obtuse. I clearly see you asking us to remember the winter of 1947 when

A: I was not born so I cant remember it.
B: you were to young to know so you cant remember it
C: it was an event not repeated in the last 65 years.

I am sorry you thought it was a definitive statement that could not be challenged, discussed or remarked upon. Maybe next time you could make that clear?

I apologise in advance if you find this obtuse or disagreeable, I tried hard not to make it so, but if you find it such, never mind I am sure it wont ruin your day.

Item C is a different issue. But you were disagreeable and obtuse.

Zero vs Nil. An unlikely combination for disharmony.

At least he doesn't argue with me anymore!

Maybe he knows he's met his match;)

Wow, such bravery Pat, ever thought of a career at sea? you would make a good captain of an Italian cruise ship.

Yes, but I know you don't mean it really Z, you're an old softie at heart!

Small wager there Iffy? I say None, starting now? Till This time next week? you prepared to put your reputation on the line? < = = =

:-)

...How many times will someone disagree with Z in the course of a week?...

He'd have stood more chance if the question was: "How many times will someone bother to disagree with Z in the course of a week?"

Tyres / ice rink demo. - Zero
Is there a wager on or not?

I suspect Z was being ironic I don't remember 1947 either. Along with the war and the general strike it was discussed enough that I was aware from a young age.

It didn't start until January. 1963 and 1979 got going a bit sooner but both saw freezing and blizzards well into March.

Anybody wanna buy 50 bags o' Taybrite, going cheep, cheep?

Oh, and I'll throw in a set of winter tyres as well.

Remarkably unscientific! Were the speeds the same? Was the cornering angle the same? were all tyres correctly inflated? What were they trying to prove? That winter tyres (why does the spellcheck show that tyres is spelt incorrectly? I haven't got it set to American - have I?) are better on sheet ice than summer tyres? Well; there's a surprise!

I've seen complaints on PistonHeads that people set off on a frosty morning on their usual route to work having fitted winter tyres and were unimpressed that they had to back off a few tenths from their normal ten tenths driving style! What on earth do these people expect?!

Well that's PH for you, everyday seems to be a race to work for some of them.

Pointless piece of TV. No tyre will be any good on sheet ice unless it has spikes/studs, which are illegal on tarmac.

They should have done the comparison on snow, when the benefits of winter tyres are clear and genuine - see the BMW video on Autocar's website.

As alluded to by Zero - Where's the snow???
Tyres / ice rink demo. - Bromptonaut

Absent so far at least in England. But as 1947 and other severe winters (63,79 etc) prove we're not out of the wood until March at least.

I'm selling 'metorite retardant' hoods for cars if anyone's interested.

In 1975 I drove through a blizzard in the Malverns in May.

Didnt have winters tyres on then either.
Tyres / ice rink demo. - PeterS
Probably didn't have 235/45 18 tyres either ;-)
