best time of the month to tax a car - diddy1234
ok possibly a stupid question but when is the best time to tax a car?

for example if i were to tax a car tomorrow would it effectivly be back dated to the beginning of the month (thus loosing most of the current month)?

so if a car was taxed a few days before the end of the month is the current month included?

i know stupid question but were all confused this end.

It runs concurrently from the expiry month of your current tax disk.

So if your disk expires end jan2012 , and you buy a new one now it will expire end jan 2013

So there is no best time as No gaps are allowed.

ah ok. would that mean if say the road tax was paid online wednesday the car could not be driven until the first of feb?

i was under the impression if paid and the reference number kept handy any car can be driven (even if no or out of tax disc is shown).
technically i would no be displaying a valid tax disc but am covered as it is paid.
after all you cant display a tax disc you dont have yet

If you want to drive it now, you can tax it now, but you will have paid for all of January without using it all.

There is no concept of part months or days when it comes to tax. You drive it in any part of the month it has to be taxed for all the month.

No it won't, it will expire 31 Dec 12. When a car is SORNed, the tax disc is surrendered and a refund is paid for any full unused months. The part-used month is then lost and cannot be "carried over", meaning that a new tax disc would start from the beginning of the current month. No grace period applies, therefore the best time to un-SORN it would be on the 1st of the month so you get all the days you've paid for.

EDIT: Overlapping posts, whoops.

You only get 12 months and 'x' days RFL when buying a new car.

Otherwise, as stated above - up to 12 months, but usually only 11 months and 'x' days unless you buy it at the start of the month.

I do not wish to be nit picking but the best Sorn date is 30th / 31st of the month - return /cash in the RFL on the 1st of the month LOSES another month's tax.

Me neither, but the OP is asking the opposite question - when to bring a stored car back into use :)

IIRC when I bought a new car in 2006 the dealer actually taxed it for 12months +2weeks at a prorata rate on a single tax disc. I was very surprised at the time, and not sure it is still possible. The dealer did not do it for the last new car in 2008!

Supposing you have a car on SORN, and on say 5th of a month you sneak out on the road for a test run. Then on the 10th you realise you have been caught, so you hastily go and buy tax. You will have to pay for the full month. But I don't think that retrospectively means that you were taxed after all. SORN was still in force on the 5th, and the tax will only run from the 10th.
Is that how it works? You pay for a full month, but the tax only runs for part of the month?

It can only be done on new cars at first registration. Seen it a few times on company lease cars but never remembered to ask when buying own cars!
