Forged licence ?.....4 months in Strangeways...... - Ted

......and he was only a passenger in a badly parked car !

Remanded 'cos they thought he might abscond...........but would it really have mattered if he did ? He was hardly a wanted serial killer !

Until I had to swap the photo on my photo driving licence, mine was a colour photo too - like they all were. What were the police thinking! There will be many more still with colour photos. Shall we lock them all up?

I wonder why they refer to Chorlton-on-Medlock. It doesn't really exist anymore because it is mostly University of Manchester buildings, hospital, art gallery etc. Not really residential.

There is still some residents in that area but most of it is just an extension of the city centre now. Still nice that old names are reserved though, Hulme is going the same way, much of Hulme be just apart of the city centre in twenty years time.

As for this case I think the entire thing is diabolical, the police who made the arrest and the people at CPS who I assume must have looked at the evidence want sacking in my opinion! Also in my opinion there might be an element of racism here, I wonder if Ted, RTJ or me would have been locked up for having a colour licence.

I am just sickened about this case really, of course we don't know the full story when stopped by the police the attitude of those stops makes a big difference to if they are going to come down the station or not!.

If I ever get stopped I sometimes have nothing on me other than a debit card, but I do usually have my driving licence on me that is a habit I should stop as I will end up loosing it in a pub one day :(.

I hope not - mine was colour until fairly recently (2009).

As he is a "refugee" seeking "political assylum" he shouldn't be issued with a driving license, or a NI number, or be allowed to open a uk bank account, or ANY form of official residents document until his status is legalised.
Forged licence ?.....4 months in Strangeways...... - rtj70
It does raise questions if that is the case Z. And if the photos have been black and white since 2007, how long has he been seeking asylum for!?! 4 years?

Maybe he was amongst the 500,000 let in:

Why not just allow him to live and work normally until his immigration status is resolved?

I think there's more to this than meets they eye though.

Because they are the rights and privileges of legal immigrants.

Now that's the bit I struggle with. Work is a privilege for legal immigrants but an obligation for the home grown.

I still don't get the rationale that says they cannot pay their way and their taxes while their status is resolved.

Because thats putting down roots, that should (in the majority of cases) be pulled up quickly, and dispatched from when they came. Thats how you end up with the "loss of human rights" angle.
Give them no rights and there is nothing to take away

Now why majority of cases?

The rules of Asylum are simple. Asylum should be claimed at the first point of safety. Unless you end up coming directly to the uk by air from your place of fear, you asylum claim should be rejected out of hand and dispatched from whence you came.

I see the argument, but isn't there another one that they could at least be earning their keep while waiting?
Like putting prisoners to work sewing mailbags and picking oakum.
Forged licence ?.....4 months in Strangeways...... - Zero
There should be no waiting.

If you fail the "first place of safety rule" you are out - immediately.

Ahh but 'a place of safety' is not as clear cut as it sounds. Is Italy or Greece a place of safety?

Turkey?........ probably not if you're Kurd.

'White Lists' have been tried in relation to the Asylum claim itself. Trouble is even countries that appear to be safe and to have stable constitutional protections can suddenly get very dodgy if you're am ethnic or religious minority with a stance of oppositon to the established order.

Yes

Also there are no direct flights from Kurdland to to the UK

But FIVE years waiting?

IMO all illegal immigrants should be kept in a workhouse type of place. Made to work, in exchange for board and lodging, all profits to HMG.

There was one near Bedford, the inmates burnt it down.

The UK cannot be the conscience for the whole world. Most asylum seekers come here via other decent democratic countries.

The reason why we have so many is the state benefits are the best or nearly the best in the world, so there may well be a true welfare reason why these people are refugees, but ultimately it's a financial decision to actually come here... and we cannot afford it.

Then bung in the limitations posed by being signed in to the HRA ...and we cannot get rid.

I don't blame anyone trying to better themselves and/or do something to help their kids, i'd do the same...but conversely i'd expect them to look after the interests of their own well being and their country, if they were in my shoes.

But to recieve any form of state benefits don't you need papers.Prove of identification etc.?

Asylum seekers are not entitled to ANY of the normal social security benefits. Those who are destitute get what is known as Asylum Support. Directed housing, no choice as to where you're sent and living expenses limited to less than £40/week for singles and around £70 for a couple. Various experiments have tried paying the cash as vouchers administered by Capita or similar - no change from shops so even the penurious sums allocated are partly lost.

A lot less generous than the press coverage would have you believe.

He looks like a villain, and with the driver having double-parked outside a cash machine it would be only natural for the police to think they might be a pair of villains.

To be fair, he might not be so keen on claiming asylum here anymore - though of course he'll be in line for a mega compensation payout.

Recently had a guest speaker from the DVLA who specialises in forged driving licences. Its big business. Once you've got your hands on a forgery or dobbed a foreign one in for a legit British licence with fake a dodgy address it opens up a great deal of opportunity to commit fraud.

When (and why) did the requirement come about for driving licence photos to be black and white ?
Forged licence ?.....4 months in Strangeways...... - Meldrew
It never has - it MUST be colour!

The type of photo you need to send

The photo taken must be:

recent and a true likeness of you
in colour, not black and white, against a light grey or cream background
clear, in sharp focus, free from ‘redeye’ and have no shadow in it
free of any reflection or glare from glasses
in good condition, not damaged, creased, torn or marked
Forged licence ?.....4 months in Strangeways...... - rtj70
The photo you send still must be colour. The photo on the licence itself is now black and white.

it just so happens I've got mine and swmbo's with me today (see my thread about what to replace the skoda with - not repaired yet, as of this morning the garage were helpful enough to say 'give us a ring at 4:30', and swmbo needs my car for the weekend, so i needed her licence to get the insurance sorted on the renter

both our licences have colour images -should we live in fear of being banged up if we get pulled ? I don't think so !
Forged licence ?.....4 months in Strangeways...... - rtj70
They used to be colour until 2007. All photo card licences since then have black and white images. So mine was a colour one in 1999. Replaced with a B&W one in 2009.
