I admire the patriotism of anyone who flies the Union Flag, but I'm just surprised at how many people fly it upside down.

Upside down is so wrong!

Why? The differences are minute. It really doesn't matter. It still shows the union of three countries.

You will note that flag is the same if you turn it upside down.

An old flag flown at Trafalgar (1805) came up for sale recently. Interestingly, there is no difference in width between the white portions, so it could have been flown either way up.

So it seems this upside down business is a modern invention.

Stop digging Z, stick to what you know, trains, and computer geek stuff.

Flying the union flag upside down is a signal of distress.

I wondered when someone would whip that old wives tale out.

Not a very useful one it seems, unless you or Roger happen to be passing ;-)

I think the distress bit is from the pre computer geek (and radio) age. :-)

I think its a great idea. I am fed up with "The UK" Whenever you have to fill out web pages with your country list on them, you have to scroll right down to the bottom, near Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. Far better when we are called "England" Its so much higher up the list.

Apparently, in the link the "old" flag is drawn wrong! - the red diagonals shouldn`t go into the right-angle created by the white border of St Georges flag. The flag on the Cushion lower down (black/white) is now the correct design, note how two of the diagonals are now placed away from the right-angle!

I didn't realize that the flag design is not symmetric!

In many countries hoisting national flag in a wrong way is a sign of disrespect.

Cyprus's has a map of the island, which to me is a step beyond writing your country's name across the flag.

The cross of St David is yellow on a black background. It might be a bit of a design clash to try to add it to the union flag.

Given the UK economy at present, what's wrong with that?

('Our' flag is simple - red on top, thanks! Still amazes me how many people don't know that, after 18 years...)

and that great patriotic song 'My country is of thee...'?

Great eavesdrop once, in a Washington hotel, between a guest and a member of staff who was going on about the guest's nationality. Apparently their system didn't recognise the one he'd entered on his check-in form: "May I remind you, sir, that the language you are speaking is named 'ENGLISH'?"

+1

The HKSAR flag is some flower I can't actually pronounce ...... Some people seem to delight in putting stickers of the old HK flag (a blue ensign with a crest) on their laptop / car / pet (sorry, my humour).
