In the old days when lengths of line were connected by fishplates, the easy way to derail a train was to remove a whole length of line on one side only.

Now that lines are welded continuously, with bevelled expansion joints, the simplest way would be to sever both lines and then drag the rails say a foot to one side. Sleepers aren't fastened to the ground, they just sit on the ballast. A big tractor or bulldozer could do it easily. Bob's your uncle.

I can't help feeling that old US film was really intended to make rail passengers feel safe.
