SAS new name? - Old Navy
While in the car this afternoon I am sure I heard a report that said a plane carrying "Extreme situation specialists" (or words to that effect) had been sent to Algeria. I wonder who that would be?

"A rapid deployment consular team was en route to Algiers with other specialists and the Algerian PM has agreed to allow UK consular staff to fly south to support those involved."

I think they were set up after the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

I would expect them to have a protection team in attendance, low key SAS or SBS.

They often do stuff on dry land, and the SAS can swim or I'm a Dutchman.

AlJazeera just now said there was a US transport on the ground near the oil/gas complex, and that the Algerians seem to have saved 100 of the 130-plus hostages. A US State Dept spokesman said grimly that he hoped the transport would be used to evacuate healthy live individuals.

There are going to be some body bags though.

People are expressing surprise that the Algerians just went for it without waiting for western 'fraught situation experts' to arrive. Personally I am not at all surprised. Indeed I expected something of the sort. The military who have ruled Algeria openly or covertly for fifty years don't take kindly to being patronised or shoved around. To put it very mildly.

I can vouch for the SAS being able to swim, they did specialist training with the Navy divers at their school many years ago, don't know if they still do.

Similair training to the Marines I imagine.More sophisticated language skills and able to blend in.That is how I see the SAS.I used to work with a chap who was in the SAS during the war.Good bloke never bragged about his service.

They don't say a word, give or take a couple of high-profile exceptions.

When someone says they have been in the special forces it often turns out they are former jailbird army cooks who have been recruited as mercenaries by some idiot. It's the same with people who say they are spies: petty crooks trying to get into some girl's pants as a rule.

That reminds me of a book I still have about a Colonel Pinto. He was in the UK during the war Dutch born and he used to vet potential spies during the war.The best man they had with the most results was a unlikely caracter with learning difficulties. What he had to do he did right and nobody suspected him.
