The clue's probably the council logo on the rubbish bin. But I can't zoom it.

I tried that too. The bin bag carries the legend HBC - so perhaps a town starting with H.

Does it?

Almost it was RBC

Runnymede BC.

Quiz! Where is this? - FocalPoint
I can zoom it*, but the resolution doesn't allow you to see much - maybe if you knew the logo (if that's what it is) on the bin you would recognise it, but I don't.

*By saving it to hard disk and opening it in a suitable photo viewer.

Nope, nor the Isle of Dogs!
Quiz! Where is this? - Crankcase
It's outside a Co-Op, which whittles it down to almost every town in the UK. Andover? It's a Victorian building too, from the vent grille pattern.

I have had an interesting virtual Streetview tour of the Irish ports even though most of the current use ports are not more than 100miles away. Must visit sometime!

I just wonder if there used to be a ferry service to Cork that is now abandoned - although everything looks too 'english'.

Did there used to be a 3 leg ferry service that took in Holyhead-Stranraer- Ireland?
Quiz! Where is this? - Alanovich
The obvious answer to the "why it's there" is, of course, "PC gone mad".

Its not helping, not at all, in any way. But, I am fascinated how you came to conclude its Chinese scaffolding?

Don't think so, the Gaelic would be different. Only place with Victorian town buildings would be Stornoway and neither of the CoOP stores looks like that.
Quiz! Where is this? - Crankcase
Base plate shape. And the litter bin doesn't appear to be Maelor, which implies a low rent council.

Where the hell did you get Chinese scaffolding from Crankcase - in fact a lot of their scaffolding is bamboo....

Anyway , I have a suspicion that it is a location for a film or TV programme set in England about some time in the past in Wales when everybody smoked.

And the reason , Welsh anti smoking laws do not allow actors to smoke on stage or set in Wales but English laws do allow it.

And if the nearest regiment is the Household Cavalry it must be a film studio or set somewhere in London......

No you are not correct, Its not a film set, or studio, and its not London. It is a public street.

Slough. When the trading estate was built post-war, there was large scale immigration from Wales. The sign is a relic of this.
Quiz! Where is this? - Zero
Its not slough, its nothing to do with any resident population.
Quiz! Where is this? - helicopter
Household cavalry is based at Combermere barracks in Windso so Pinewood, Sheppertom or Twickenham.....

Its not a film studio, tho you are getting geographically close.

Waterlooville, temporary sign during roadworks?
Quiz! Where is this? - Zero
Nope, why would that be in Welsh?

Edit Ah! I see how you came to that conclusion.

Hint, the sign is still there but not in Welsh.

Surrey. The sign was put up for filming "An American Werewolf in London" - the scenes supposedly at "The Slaughtered Lamb" in Wales were filmed at Martyr's Green near Leatherhead and Guildford.

I feel sure you meant "blessed".

Nobody has raised the issue of why the reflections in the window are apparently the correct way round! Presumably because the shops on the other side of the road not paralell. Hence it is a reflection of a a reflection?

So far i hav e 'visited' all the Coops in Surrey and apparently none fit!
Quiz! Where is this? - Alanovich
Is it in a part of Greater London which was once in Surrey? Croydon, for instance?

No, its in a part of Surrey that always been a part of Surrey.

The blue umbrella reflected in the window is the Caffe Nero clue. I don't think the other "Big Deals" signs are reflections, that's inside the Co-Op. Is my guess.

I dont know how you worked out that was a Co-op but it is indeed a co-op.

Maybe the clue is in the shop sign above the glass:)
Quiz! Where is this? - Zero
So it is? I never noticed. But then I know where it is.
Quiz! Where is this? - Crankcase
Co-op was easy. They do the "Big Deals" signs, and the date I posted earlier was the first date that point of sale material was shipped to their shops. Oh, and the shop sign, yes!

Well I've streetviewed all the Co ops I can find in Slurrey and it ain't any of them.
Quiz! Where is this? - Zero
It is. But dont forget that streetview is out of date, and scaffolding is temporary?
Quiz! Where is this? - Alanovich
Yeah, I just can't find any that are so close to a narrow pavement, and facing a T-junction which would necessitate a No Right Turn sign opposite. I expect I've missed a few, though.

Essentially, I give up.
Quiz! Where is this? - Cliff Pope
Smoking scenes are banned in wales, therefore it's a mock-up for a vital welsh film scene, but filmed in England for legal reasons.

Nice move for the Welsh film industry - no period dramas.

Bum. I checked out the one in Addlestone, but I didn't spot Chertsey having a branch. I haven't been there since my late Uncle George ran a butcher's shop on the High Street.
Quiz! Where is this? - Crankcase
But but.. I've only just noticed it's opposite a jewellers! There's so much mileage in this yet...

:)

Edit. Too late. Sigh.

Great game though, thanks. We should start a thread.

Happened to be in town the day they were filming, was in the coffee shop opposite the offending sign and I thought WTF.

Wasn't till i walked up the road to where they had turned a caffe into Port Talbot Carphone Warehouse and the film crew was in action that I twigged.

Mileage going the wrong way........No jewellers opposite.,...
Quiz! Where is this? - Crankcase
No jewellers? Interesting. They look a lot like ring trays in the reflection, right at the left hand edge. And possibly next to the hi viz person too, near their hand. Hmmm...

My turn for a guess.. 92 Guildford St, Chertsey, Surrey KT16, United Kingdom.
